Dear Paso Robles High School Families,
I am writing to address concerns that have been raised regarding this year's Paso Robles High School yearbook.
Photographs included in coverage of a student protest contain visible profanity on signs held by participants. While students have important rights to freedom of expression, including in official student publications, the inclusion of profanity in a school-sponsored publication does not align with District expectations, Board policy, or applicable provisions of California Education Code. (Applicable Board policy and California Education code are linked in the comments, below.)
The issue under review is not the coverage of the student protest itself. Student expression and the documentation of significant events that occur during a school year are appropriate subjects for a yearbook. Rather, the concern is that profane language appeared in a publication produced under the school's supervision and was distributed to students and families, which is a matter we take seriously.
District and school administrators are currently conducting a review to understand how this content was approved through the yearbook's editorial and publication process. This review will include examining the timeline of decisions, the procedures that were followed, and the roles and responsibilities associated with final publication review.
At the same time, we are evaluating potential options for addressing the issue. While no final decisions have been made, possible remedies under consideration include corrective measures related to the affected page and improvements to publication review procedures moving forward.
If you have questions or concerns regarding this matter, please contact me directly at [email protected]. The District is actively reviewing this issue, and responsibility for addressing concerns rests with school and district administration. Student yearbook staff should not be placed in the position of responding to questions or criticism regarding an ongoing administrative review. We respectfully ask that community members direct all communication regarding this matter to school administration and refrain from contacting student yearbook staff or messaging student-affiliated social media accounts.
We appreciate your patience as we work to fully understand what occurred and determine appropriate next steps.
Sincerely,
Mike Susank
Principal

Good afternoon Bearcats, Bearcat Families, and Paso Robles Community,
We are writing to inform you that Paso Robles High School administration is aware of rumors circulating among students, families, and on social media regarding alleged threats toward the school community.
Yesterday, administration investigated an old text message that had resurfaced and was being recirculated among students. Additional rumors and secondhand claims circulating this morning are also being taken seriously and are being reviewed in coordination with law enforcement and school administration.
At this time, no direct reports containing specific or credible information regarding these circulating claims have been made to school administration, law enforcement, or the District’s anonymous tip line. We want to reiterate that if you see, hear, or become aware of anything concerning, you should report it immediately to school administration, a counselor, law enforcement, or through the anonymous tip line — even if you believe someone else may have already done so. (The link to the anonymous tip line can be found in the comments, below.)
When rumors circulate widely, it can become easy to assume that “someone else already reported it.” However, when people rely on that assumption, important information may not reach the authorities responsible for investigating and responding. Direct reporting, rather than reposting or discussing concerns through social media, group chats, or text messages, allows appropriate authorities to assess situations quickly, thoroughly, and effectively.
We strongly urge students and families not to spread unverified rumors, screenshots, or secondhand information online. Sharing unconfirmed information is not harmless — it can unintentionally contribute to fear, confusion, and misinformation within our school community, while also making it more difficult for authorities to identify and investigate credible concerns in real time.
The safety and well-being of our students and staff remain our highest priority. If at any point school administration or law enforcement believed there was a credible or immediate threat to students or staff, appropriate action would be taken immediately, and families would be notified through official District communication channels.
We appreciate the partnership and cooperation of our students, families, and community as we continue working together to maintain a safe and supportive learning environment for everyone.
Thank you for your continued support and partnership,
District Administration
