"Founded by Stewart and Phil Kinder, from Atascadero. Stewart also had a placer gold claim on Willow above McGranahan named "KC" not for Kenny Comello but "Kinder-Cave" with his partner John Cave. I claimed that old cabin beside the Willow campground in Jul 67." - Dr. Ed Jones

Edward Jones shared a link to the group: You know you're from Big Sur if.
The oldest topo map of Big Sur south coast, surveyed 1917, published 1921. Really rare, and long before Highway One.

The True Story of Gorda can now be told. You see it all began when Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo (his nationality – Portuguese or Spanish – has been debated for centuries) sailed north past a big, fat rock (shown here) sitting off a promontory in early November 1542.
Since Juan was the first to pass this route (Hwy 1 had not yet been surveyed), he told his first mate to name the place after a good Catholic saint, and "Cabo de San Martin" was named (in memory of Saint Martin of Tours France, or Saint Martin of Braga Portugal, or Pope Saint Martin I of Umbria). But the big, fat rock at the cape caught the crew of his flagship San Salvador. They adored fat girls. They named her "Gorda."
In the mid-1960s, groups of hippies from The City arrived at Cape San Martin, and set forth to harvest tons of the rich seabird guano deposits atop Gorda Rock, which they exported to Esalen Institute (for fertilizer on that organic garden). Those Gorda Guano grunts traded the fresh product for bath privileges at the going rate of a one-hour soak per pound of guano.
This incredible Big Sur history has been fully researched, documented, and made up by yours truly, who first mined Gorda Guano in 1951. Stay tuned for the True History of Sand Dollar Beach and the Pacific Valley Slot Machine Casino. You are welcome!
