I can’t believe school starts in two weeks from tomorrow! I have my school/craft closet all organized and ready to go. So excited to start this new year and help kids with their Science, Hisotry, Art, and PE! I have a few more spots left, let me know if you’re interested!

I know, I know I haven’t done a post since before school started and now school is out. So, you may have been wondering if we are still around and no worries we are!
Right before school started (literally three days before school started) we moved into a new home in Pasco. This home was perfect for Rise Academy. We ended up with two students this past year but honestly this was perfect to allow me to get my feet wet and figure out our routine and schedule. These two boys and I had the best year, and we have all agreed that it is time to add a few more students (we’ve already found one!).
What did we do this year? We learned all about the 50 states for history. We covered Botany, Space, Geology, and Paleontology for Science. PE was a bit tricky with only three of us, but we did a lot of brain challenge moving games in the winter, baseball (I am not the best pitcher, but we tried our best), kickball, bowling, yoga, basketball, soccer, co****le, hopscotch, and the list goes on. Art was definitely a favorite though and we had many a day where it went long. Read aloud time wasn’t everyone’s favorite time but it was mine. We were able to read Wonder, The Hatchet, and Heart of a Samurai.
SO, if you’re looking for help with your 3rd, 4th, or 5th grader in science, history, art, and PE please let us know. We’d love to add them to our class. Our schedule for this next year is going to be Mondays and Thursdays 8:45 to 1:30 pm and if Monday just so happens to be a holiday then we’ll do a makeup day on Tuesday.

School is just around the corner and I am getting excited! I have received the history and science curriculum that we will be starting with and it all looks great! Also, we know where school will be (we found a house in Pasco and will be moved before the first day of school) and can I just say that recess and PE will be SO much fun in this amazing backyard.

I had a great question the other day that I thought I would answer here in case anyone else had the same question.

Will the kids do presentations?

Yes. One of my goals is to help kids feel more comfortable being in front of their peers and others. We will start every morning with a prayer and devotional from the Bible and we will all take turns. Also, I plan on them doing a Science Fair (don’t worry we’ll try to do most of the work during our science time), history projects, and even monthly book reports. I also want your kids to present some of these projects and reports to the parents (either one special evening or during our class time; depending on what works best for everyone’s schedules).
I realize that everyone is at different levels in their academics and comfort levels in front of other people. I will be sensitive to their needs, but I want to push them enough so that they are a little bit out of their comfort zone to help them grow. I will also contact parents as needed because you know your child best.

Watch for my registration announcement coming next week! You must first complete an application (several are already submitted) for me to review before you will be allowed to register.

As always, please feel free to comment or send me message with any questions or if you are interested in filling out an application for you child/children.

I decided I’d do a quick FAQ post.

Where will Rise Academy be located?
West Pasco. I have a sister who lives in West Pasco who has graciously offered us a space in her home. I am in the process of looking for a new a home in West Pasco. Once we purchase a new home, then we will relocate Rise Academy to my house.

Is this a school?
No. I think of myself more as a mentor/tutor for your child. You are doing homeschool and as their parents you are the experts for what your child needs. So, if you feel that they could use more help and time outside of the home for Science, History, Art, and PE, you can send them to me twice a week to help supplement their education. But ultimately, you oversee their education as their primary educators.

What about math and language arts?
Math and language arts are your responsibility. I think these two subjects are the easiest for parents to teach and require minimal-to-no parental preparation. From my experience, the speed that children can complete and master these lessons varies dramatically among children. So, a one-on-one approach is often ideal.
If you are looking for homeschool curriculum for these two subjects, I can give you my recommendations.

When will your year start and end?
We will meet every Tuesday and Thursday. The first day of class beginning on Tuesday, September 7th 2022 and the final day being Thursday, May 25th 2023.
What time will I start each morning and end each day is still a little up in the air depending on my needs and parents needs but I’m thinking 8:40am to 1:40 pm schedule.

How much is tuition?
$250/month with a $150 registration/supply fee at the beginning of the year.

Will you have vacation Days?
My plan is to have no school on Thanksgiving, a two-week Christmas break and a Spring Break the same week as PSD.
How many students will you have?
My maximum is 10 students. I know my abilities and I feel like more then that and I won’t be able to give them all the attention that they need. Maybe that will change in the future if I feel I can handle more or if I have help.
What grades will you have?
3rd to 5th grade.

Will they have recess?
Recess is SO important no matter the age. So, if it is not pouring rain or a concern for frost bite, I’m going to encourage them to be outside for recess and lunch.
I’m also thinking of ending the day with a 10-minute recess, sort of an incentive for them to be on task and to get everything done by 1:30pm so they can have that last 10 minutes to play with their friends.

Well, I think this is a great start. Shoot me an email [email protected] or DM if you have anymore questions. And, please share this post to help get the word out. Also, if my one room school house doesn’t fit your needs (like if you need a different age or 4 day a week) please feel free to check out others that are in our area https://www.1roomschoolhouse.org/for-parents

Today, I want to introduce my first student enrolled in Rise Academy. Meet Evan, my son, and the reason I decided to open Rise Academy. Evan loves all things Legos, Pokémon, and Bakugan. He is also a fountain of knowledge. If he has heard it or watched it on TV, he can tell you all about it. Evan spends a lot of his time making art and listening to books. Somedays, the boy can spend several hours listening to almost an entire book if it captures his attention.
Last year, our plan was to enroll all our boys in one-room schoolhouses. After a year of homeschooling, our boys were excited to go back to seeing friends and classmates on a regular basis and we loved the idea of it being in a classroom but it being smaller and more personable. However, at the beginning of last summer we found out that Evan has dyslexia (Evan would tell you that he is a demigod because according to Percy Jackson most demigods have dyslexia so Evan too must then be a demigod.). With this information, we decided it would be best if I continued to homeschool Evan and have a tutor to help with reading and writing. This was the best decision for him. He has grown and made so much progress this past year we couldn’t be prouder of him and all his hard work.
While Evan has made a lot of progress, he constantly asks me when it will be his turn to go to a one-room schoolhouse. I want him to go, but I also know that there was a good chance that all the progress he has made in his reading and writing would be lost if I let him attend a full-time one-room schoolhouse. Plus, even though he thinks he wants to go to school every day, I know him well enough that going four days a week just isn’t the right fit for him now.
Thus began my idea of doing a two-day per week schoolhouse that covered art, PE, science and history, and keep working at home on math, reading, and writing. I thought maybe I’d be the only one that needed a shortened, personalized approach, but the feedback that I got from others made me think maybe I wasn’t the only one. Now I am starting my own one-room schoolhouse.
So please, if you think you might be interested or think there might be someone else in your circle of friends that could be interested reach out to me to start the process or share my page.

Hello, my name is Stephanie Quillen and I am the tutor/owner of Rise Academy.

To start off, I would like to introduce myself. I am a mother of three boys (ages 12, 9, and 7), married to an amazing and supportive husband, and I have lived in Central Washington most of my life. I have an undergraduate degree in Marriage Family and Human Development and a master’s degree in Social Work. The past two years I have been homeschooling and it has been quite the “educational” experience.

I decided to open Rise Academy to help parents primarily with their 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students when it comes to homeschooling. When it comes to homeschooling, my experience is that math and language arts are the easiest for parents to teach. But when it comes to art, science, history and PE, a group setting with other kids is more ideal and fun!

So, if you think you might be interested, please reach out to me and I'll send you more information along with an application.
