R&B singer, Alicia Keys (New York 1981), grew up admiring the music of Mozart, Chopin, and Beethoven. She learned to play the piano at the age of seven, and began writing songs by the time she was 14. She attended the Professional Performing Arts School in New York City, where she graduated as Valedictorian when she was just 16. Alicia got even accepted to Columbia University, but life took her to a different different career path. American Pop Singer and pianist, Billy Joel, was born in The Bronx, NY in 1949. A reluctant piano player, he started to take piano lessons at his mother's insistence. He decided to become a musician after seeing The Beatles performed in the Edd Sullivan Show in 1964. By the time he was 14, he joined The Echoes, a British Invasion hits cover band, and the rest, as they say, is history. This is Billy Joel performing his hit song "Piano Man."

The longest piano piece ever written is "Beatus Vir" by American composer Jacob Mashak. It lasts for almost eleven hours. The shortest one is "Symphonic Nocturne for Piano Alone" by English composer Kaikhosru Shapurji Sorabji (1892-1988). Its duration is two hours.
