Breath and Emotion Connected by Newly Identified Brain Circuit

Researchers have discovered a brain circuit connecting the anterior cingulate cortex, pons, and medulla that links voluntary breathing control to emotional states.

This circuit slows breathing during calm moments and accelerates it under anxiety, offering a neurological basis for practices like yoga and mindfulness.

Experiments in mice revealed that activating this circuit reduced anxiety and slowed breathing, while deactivating it increased stress and breathing rates.

Neural Circuit Found to Regulate Chewing and Appetite

Researchers have identified a simple neural circuit that connects hunger signals to the jaw movements required for chewing.

This three-neuron pathway involves BDNF neurons in the hypothalamus, which receive signals from hunger-regulating hormones like leptin.

When these BDNF neurons are activated, the impulse to eat is suppressed, and jaw movements stop, even if the animal is hungry.

Moral Values Shift with the Seasons

A new study reveals that people's moral values fluctuate with the seasons, with group-oriented values like loyalty, authority, and purity being more strongly endorsed in the spring and fall.

These seasonal shifts have significant implications for various societal outcomes, including political opinions, legal judgments, and public health responses.

The research suggests that higher anxiety levels during these seasons may drive people to seek comfort in group norms and traditions.

Understanding these patterns could help tailor strategies in politics, law, and health campaigns to better align with public sentiment throughout the year.
