Dear B’nai Community,

As 2022 is coming to an end, I find myself reflecting not only on the year that passed, but more so on the last almost three years since the pandemic hit us.

We were all faced with impossible decisions; can we visit grandma, and put her at risk? Can I send my child to school, and risk their health, and our own health? Is it safe to travel? Can we leave our home for leisure, or do we stay put until a vaccine is available? Is it safe to open our school again? How do we keep our staff and families healthy? These were just a few of the immense challenges that we faced alone and together as a community! It has been, and still is stressful, traumatic and challenging as we find our new normal.

Here at B’nai we were and are blessed with a community who trusted in science, who took all necessary precautions, and together we kept each other safe and healthy. You also all supported us as we struggled tremendously financially as the covid regulations put a tremendous financial burden on the school. Because of your support, we were able to sail the storm, while still growing our community to support the needs of our families.

We still need your support. As 2022 is coming to an end, now is the perfect time to make your tax deductible donations towards our annual appeal. We strive to ensure better work compensation for our staff, more enrichment for the children which will include more Hebrew language and Jewish experiences, updated equipment school wide, and whole school events both for parents only, and for families.

For over 40 years, B’nai Simcha has been a pillar of Jewish and early childhood education in the San Gabriel Valley, and the starting point for many young children to cultivate a strong Jewish identity. Our school was faced with many challenges during the last few years, yet with community support, we have not stopped growing or thriving. We are deeply saddened to share the news that our beloved teacher, Yvonne Soto, suddenly passed away last night. Many of you know her as the “Teddy Bear Teacher.” She cared for the youngest of B’nai children for over 34 years.

Yvonne was always positive, calm, kind, gentle and loving. She adored the children and loved B'nai Simcha. Yvonne dedicated her life to B'nai Simcha and cared for generations of children that walked through these doors. To many parents, she was the first person that they trusted to leave their children with.

We will always remember Yvonne as someone who always put others first; a sweet and generous woman. She was a gift to everyone who knew her.

As we know more details of how her family would like to celebrate her life, we will be in touch. May her memory be a blessing.

Dear B’nai Community,
As Rosh Hashana has taken its leave we now find ourselves in the incredibly holy and auspicious time between Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur. This time is referred to as the ten days of repentance, or in Hebrew, the 10 days of teshuva. Teshuva means to return, and to me, invokes reflection on the past year, setting goals for the future, and most importantly supporting the communities we are a part of. Yesterday we celebrated Joan Sayre’s retirement and commitment to B’nai Simcha by unveiling the Joan Sayre Children’s Library and honoring her dedication with an intimate luncheon. Joan, we thank you deeply for your forty years of service to our B’nai Simcha community and families. Please join us in congratulating Joan on her retirement!
