ATTENTION INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS!
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security is proposing a major change that could impact every F-1 and J-1 visa holder.
End of “Duration of Status (D/S)” → replaced with a fixed stay (up to 4 years).
That means no more flexibility — your stay ends when your I-20 or DS-2019 expires.
If you need extra time to:
finish your thesis,
transfer schools,
pursue another degree, or
start OPT...
you’ll need to file a costly, time-sensitive USCIS extension (Form I-539).
Miss that date? You’ll immediately fall out of status and begin accruing unlawful presence — a serious issue with long-term consequences.
Other changes:
F-1 post-completion grace period: cut from 60 days → 30 days.
Extensions now require formal applications, not just document updates.
⚠️ This is still a proposal, not law — but prepare now!

Have you received an RFE (Request for Evidence) notice from USCIS? Don't panic! An RFE is not a denial, but rather an opportunity to strengthen your application for a change of status, especially if you have used Day 1 CPT before. It's essential to take this seriously and provide compelling evidence that you are eligible for an H1B visa.
The most common reason for receiving an RFE when using CPT is "Maintenance of Status." USCIS may question whether you properly maintained your current status while utilizing CPT or OPT under an F1 visa. It's crucial to gather paperwork and evidence to demonstrate your compliance with student employment requirements during your CPT program.
