Yesterday’s New Family Orientation marked the beginning of the Walden experience for our newest students and families. 💚 Gathering together in the Community Room, Terra led their first assembly with a reading of “This Is a School” by John Schu, a story celebrating all the ways we learn, grow, and come together as a school community. Students spent time with their teachers and began making new friends, while parents and caregivers visited stations around campus to learn about Walden’s culture and common practices. Our new families even got to practice their first carline experience - one more way to feel ready for the first day of school! 🌟

Last week, this year’s 5th graders spent a morning on campus, ready to help! 📚✨ A beloved tradition created by our 4/5 teaching team, this special morning gives 5th graders a chance to help teachers set up classrooms, organize classroom libraries, and get spaces ready for the new year.

It’s a fun first opportunity to step into leadership in their 4/5 classroom communities, reconnect with teachers, and help create a welcoming start for their 4th-grade classmates. We can’t wait to have everyone back together on Thursday!

This week’s In-Service Week kicked off with a guiding theme for the year: “Walden in the World.” Building on Walden’s long-standing commitment to exploring the systems that shape our world and nurturing stewardship, we’ll be expanding our field trips and connections with local organizations.

As we look ahead, we’re looking back at a highlight in this work from last year: the K/1 Imaginative Inquiry social studies unit, which took students on a journey into what makes a city work. Students became a team of city helpers, stepping into the roles of departments including public works, transportation, public health, and animal control. Through field trips and conversations with city employees, they learned firsthand about the people who help keep our community running.

Students also discovered a local challenge: the unfinished 710 freeway stub. After learning about its history and present, they redesigned the space with ideas that would benefit the people, animals, and plants of Pasadena. They then practiced civic engagement by writing persuasive letters to the City Council. The project culminated with Open House presentations and a special visit from City Council Member Jason Lyon on the last day of school. Each student confidently shared their ideas and inventions, giving us a wonderful glimpse of young people finding their voices as civic thinkers and changemakers.

We’re grateful to Jason Lyon for listening so thoughtfully to our students, and we hope to see some of their imaginative ideas reflected in the future of the 710 stub. We’re excited to put “Walden in the World” into action this year! Because Open House is such a marvelous celebration of learning, it deserves a second post — this time celebrating what happens the following day!

The day after Open House, our faculty and staff come together for a beloved in-service tradition: visiting each classroom and specialty space, learning from one another, and diving into the incredible learning happening across campus all year long.

Sharing, reflecting, and celebrating and finding inspiration in one another’s work is an important component of Walden’s ongoing professional growth and renewal work. These conversations strengthen collaboration across grade levels and subject areas, and help enrich the learning journey for every Walden student.

We are so grateful for the curiosity, enthusiasm, generosity, and care our faculty bring to one another and to their work every single day. đź’š

Our 2026 Open House, Walden’s annual celebration of learning, invited families to see, hear about, and experience their children’s adventures in learning this year.

Themed “Meander and Marvel,” the evening encouraged families to slow down, ask questions, and marvel at the ideas, creativity, and curiosity on display throughout campus. From Imaginative Inquiry social studies projects to language arts writing, math explorations, specialist studios, and more, students proudly shared work that reflected not only what they learned, but the questions they asked, the connections they made, and the ideas they developed.

Across every space, students demonstrated the power of curiosity, creativity, and critical thinking, using their learning to explore the world around them and imagine ways to contribute to a more inclusive, accessible, and thoughtful future. Presenting their ideas and explaining their process is a vital stage in the learning journey, and families’ curiosity, conversations, and encouragement brought their marvelous projects to life. 💚🌟

During our annual 6th Grade Inquiry Fair, the Class of 2026 Whale Sharks shared projects driven by their own questions, passions, and curiosity. Thoughtfully designed for audiences of all ages, the presentations reflected deep research, expert interviews, and engagement with current topics.

From the class pet rats demonstrating the neuroscience of learning through a maze challenge, to interactive experiments exploring how movement boosts mood, to students sitting on the floor with younger peers to read, share, and connect, the fair was a meaningful celebration of wonder, creativity, connection, and the power of pursuing knowledge and sharing it with others. đź’š
