You Don’t Have to Know What’s Next
Have you ever found yourself asking God, “What’s next?”
Maybe you know God has brought you this far. You know He’s been faithful. You know He hasn’t left you. But if you’re being honest, you’d really like to know what He’s doing.
Where is this going? When is this going to change? When is that door going to open? What am I supposed to do next?
There’s something uncomfortable about trusting God when you can’t see where He’s taking you. And I think sometimes we convince ourselves that if God is really leading us, then surely we should be able to see the plan.
But Scripture says, “Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path.” — Psalm 119:105
I love the picture that gives us because a lamp doesn’t light up the next ten miles. It gives you enough light to see what’s right in front of you.
And maybe somebody needs to hear this going into this week:
You don’t need to know what God is doing next to trust what God is doing now.
I think sometimes we get frustrated because God hasn’t answered questions He never promised to answer yet. We want the five year plan, but God says, Take this step. We want to know how everything is going to work out, and God says, Trust Me here. We want to know what’s behind the next door while God is asking us to be faithful with the door He’s already opened.
Abraham left without knowing exactly where he was going. Joseph received a dream, but God didn’t show him the pit or the prison that would come before the palace. David was anointed to be king…and then went right back to tending sheep.
They had a promise.
They just didn’t have the whole map.
And maybe neither do you.
Maybe you’re in a season right now where you genuinely don’t know what’s next. You don’t know how the situation is going to work out. You don’t know when the answer is coming. You don’t know when the door is going to open.
And maybe you’ve been praying, “God, just show me where You’re taking me.”
But what if there’s something deeper happening?
What if God isn’t withholding the whole map because He’s forgotten about you? What if He’s teaching you something that having the map could never teach you?
Because when you have the whole map, you can follow the map.
But when you don’t have the map… you have to follow His voice.
Maybe that’s what God is developing in you in this season.
Maybe you’ve been so focused on where God is taking you that you’ve missed who you’re becoming while you follow Him there.
Jesus said, “My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me.” — John 10:27
Maybe the greatest thing God is developing in you right now isn’t your ability to understand His plan.
Maybe it’s your ability to recognize His voice.
Because there may come a day when you finally walk through the door you’ve been praying would open. You may finally receive the answer you’ve been waiting for. You may finally arrive at the place you’ve been asking God to take you.
And when you look back, you might realize something.
The greatest thing God gave you wasn’t the destination.
It wasn’t the open door.
It wasn’t even the answered prayer.
It was the relationship you developed with Him on the way there.
So going into this week, maybe your prayer doesn’t need to be, “God, show me everything.”
Maybe it’s simply:
“God, show me my next step…and help me trust Your voice enough to take it.”
You don’t have to see the whole road. You don’t have to have everything figured out. You just have to stay close to the One who does.
God may not give you the whole map, but He will give you enough light for the next step.
