🌟 It’s Alumni Spotlight Thursday! 🖤💛⚖️

This week, Tucker County Schools is proud to feature Melissa L. Rhoads, Esq., Tucker County High School Class of 1999!

From Tucker County to becoming a successful attorney and business owner, Melissa’s journey is a wonderful example of the opportunities that begin with a West Virginia public school education.

After graduating from TCHS, Melissa attended Wheeling Jesuit University and Syracuse University College of Law, graduating cm laude from both. Today, she is the sole owner of Tighe & Cottrell, P.A., a law firm serving Delaware and Maryland, as well as Delaware Incorporation Services, Inc., where she helps others establish their own businesses.

But Melissa’s Tucker County memories are just as impressive as her accomplishments! She spent four years keeping the scorebook for her uncle Coach Kyle’s Lady Mountain Lion three-peat state championship basketball team, traveled to countless games and tournaments, and remembers those unforgettable trips to Charleston. Add in school bus adventures, driving around with friends before cell phones, and a little Matchbox Twenty and country music, and you have some pretty great memories! 😄

Melissa also remembers the teachers who encouraged her to think independently and dream big, especially Mrs. Poling, whose love of learning and adventure made a lasting impression.

One of our favorite parts of Melissa’s story is what she says about West Virginia public education:

“A public education represents opportunity. It is somewhere to discover your strengths and dream for your future.”

Today, Melissa calls Delaware home, where she enjoys life with her two daughters, Emily and Avery, and their mini goldendoodle, Dolly Mae Doodlebug. Her definition of success has evolved from material accomplishments to helping others and having the freedom to enjoy family, friends, and new experiences.

Her advice to today’s Tucker County students?

“Be brave enough to be different.”

We’re proud to celebrate Melissa L. Rhoads and another wonderful example of where Tucker County roots can lead! 🖤💛

Our roots. Our people. Our pride.
Once a Mountain Lion, always a Mountain Lion!

🖤💛 TCS STUDENT FEATURE FRIDAY: MEET BROOKS WALDO! 🖤💛

It’s Friday, which means it’s time to meet another one of the students who makes Tucker County Schools special!

This week, TCS Student Feature Friday takes us to Davis Thomas Elementary Middle School, where we’re getting to know third grader Sterling “Brooks” Waldo.

It didn’t take long during our conversation to discover two things Brooks really loves: soccer and Harry Potter! Brooks plays soccer in the Oakland, Maryland area, loves to read, and is already working his way through the fifth Harry Potter book—all on his own. And he has a rule: read the book first, then watch the movie, because, as Brooks pointed out, the movies leave things out!

But there’s much more to Brooks. He enjoys fishing, dreams of catching a salmon in Alaska, loves learning new things, and is proud of the progress he’s making in math. He even has an idea about what he’d teach if we turned the classroom over to him for a day.

And when we asked this third grader what he might want to be when he grows up? He already has his eye on engineering and designing things.

So, let’s get to know Brooks Waldo! 🖤💛

🎤 Q&A WITH BROOKS

Q: Tell us a few things about yourself.

Brooks: I really like soccer, football for fun, and reading. I play soccer in the Oakland, Maryland area, and my mom and dad also help with the middle school soccer team.

Q: We hear you really like to read. What’s your favorite book?

Brooks: Harry Potter! I’m on the fifth book now, and I read them by myself. I read the book first and then watch the movie because the movie leaves a lot of things out.

Q: What’s your favorite thing about being in third grade?

Brooks: The salad bar! Third grade and up get the salad bar, and I like it.

Q: What are you really good at or proud of?

Brooks: Soccer. Right now, my dad rotates us around to different positions to see where everyone plays best. My favorite positions are probably midfield or defense.

Q: What do you like doing when you’re not at school?

Brooks: Playing soccer, reading, practicing and watching the Harry Potter movies after I finish the books.

Q: What is something that was difficult at first but you’re getting better at?

Brooks: Division and multiplication have been hard, but when I go to afterschool, I pick up little tips that help me with both.

Q: You’ve been part of afterschool for a while. What do you like about it?

Brooks: I’ve gone to afterschool since I could. I like it because it’s fun!

Q: Who is someone you look up to?

Brooks: My dad because he’s fun.

Q: If you could be the teacher for one day, what would you teach your class?

Brooks: I’d teach them how to read big, long words. Some kids are still sounding them out, so I’d help them learn how to read them.

Q: If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go?

Brooks: Alaska. My dad went there once and said it had good fishing. I like to fish, and I want to catch a salmon.

And Brooks made one thing very clear: he likes catching fish—not eating them! 🎣

Q: What makes you really happy?

Brooks: Winning things, finishing something that took a long time, or doing something really fun—like going to Great Wolf Lodge.

🌟 It’s Alumni Spotlight Thursday! 🖤💛🌎

This week, our Tucker County Schools Alumni Spotlight is going places—quite literally! We’re excited to feature Heather Ramsey, Tucker County High School Class of 1997, whose journey has taken her from Tucker County to all seven continents—including Antarctica twice!

After graduating from TCHS, Heather began her career as a geologist before taking an entirely different path into the world of technology. Today, she manages a large team supporting customers who use software to design, deploy, and govern artificial intelligence, machine learning, and data analytics applications. Along the way, both careers have given her opportunities to explore the world, experience different cultures, and discover just how far a girl from Tucker County can go.

But no matter how many places Heather has explored, her Tucker County roots remain an important part of her story. She credits her teachers with making the world seem possible, remembers walking miles around the football field during games, laughs about peg-rolled jeans and bad perms, and still gives a special shout-out to her dad for all those mornings he had to drive her to school after she missed the bus! 😊

Heather also shares an important lesson she learned early in her career after someone criticized her West Virginia accent: be proud of where you come from and never feel like you have to hide your roots to belong.

Perhaps her message to today’s students says it best: “Coming from a small town is a superpower, not a limitation.” Stay curious, keep exploring, be willing to change paths, and never let where you started determine how far you can go.

From Tucker County to all seven continents, we’re proud to shine this week’s Alumni Spotlight on Heather Ramsey! 🖤💛🌎

Our roots. Our people. Our pride.
Proud to be Tucker County.
