When "Optional" Stopped Meaning Optional: What the Return of SAT Testing Means for North Jersey Families

For four years, the SAT lived in a strange kind of limbo. Test-optional policies spread across the country during the pandemic, and many families understandably read "optional" as "unnecessary." Then, almost in unison, the most selective universities in the country changed their minds.

It started in early 2024, when Dartmouth reinstated its SAT/ACT requirement after a faculty study found that test scores remained the single strongest predictor of how a student would perform once on campus. Within months, Yale, Brown, Harvard, Caltech, Stanford, Johns Hopkins, and the University of Texas at Austin had all followed. The 2025–2026 cycle brought another wave: the University of Pennsylvania, Cornell, Princeton, Ohio State, the University of Miami, and Louisiana State, with the entire Florida, Georgia, and Texas public systems having already returned to required testing.

The reasoning these universities have shared is consistent. After several years of data, admissions offices concluded that a strong test score gives them context that grades alone cannot — particularly for identifying students who are genuinely prepared for the academic demands ahead. In other words, "test-optional" was quietly being replaced by "test-recommended," and now, at a growing list of schools, "test-required."

Why this matters for your student now

For parents of high schoolers in North Jersey, the practical takeaway is simple: the SAT has moved back to the center of the college conversation. Students in the classes of 2026 and 2027 are once again being evaluated, at many schools, on a number that reflects how well they reason through evidence-based reading and writing passages and work through both the calculator and no-calculator math sections. A score that once felt like an optional bonus is, for selective admissions, becoming a core part of the application again.

This shift also changes the timeline. Junior year is already the most crowded stretch of high school — AP courses, activities, recommendation-building, and the early stages of the college essay. Add Early Decision deadlines that arrive in November of senior year, and a student who waits until junior fall to begin serious SAT preparation often finds there is little room left to learn the material, sit for the test, and retake it if needed.

That is why the summer before junior year tends to be the most valuable preparation window of all. It is a stretch of time with fewer competing demands, when a student can build real skill rather than cram, and walk into junior year with the test largely behind them.

How Y2 Academy's Summer SAT Camp uses that window

Y2 Academy's Summer SAT Camp in Parsippany and Bridgewater is built specifically for this moment. Rather than scattered review, the program moves through every section of the SAT in a structured sequence — reading and writing reasoning, the calculator math section, and the no-calculator section — so that students understand not just *what* the right answer is, but *why*, and how to find it under timed conditions.

A few elements that families often ask about:

- **Small-group instruction** with experienced instructors, so each student receives attention on the specific areas where they tend to lose points.
- **A patented adaptive practice portal** that generates personalized homework based on each student's individual weak areas, rather than the same worksheet for everyone.

- **A structured score-improvement guarantee** — if a student does not reach the targeted improvement, additional sessions are provided at no extra cost.

The aim is steady, measurable progress over the summer, so that when junior year begins, the SAT is a strength a student can point to rather than a deadline still looming over them.

# # # Learning more

Families who are exploring SAT preparation this summer are warmly welcome to reach out and learn more about the camp's schedule, what each week covers, and how to reserve a spot for their student. There is no pressure in a conversation — just a clear picture of what structured preparation looks like and whether it's the right fit for your family.

*The colleges have made their decision about testing. The good news for families is that a strong score is something a student can absolutely build — with the right structure, and the right timing.*
