In 2004, my kids and I walked into Michael J Zone to participate in their Martial Arts program.

Older gentlemen stood there at the front, greeted us, looked at our belts and certificates and lined us up.

From there began a 22 year long relationship that has seen its ups and downs, its successes and difficulties.

Always there were several things he expected- respect for self and others. Train purely, hard and without ego and conceit. Seek knowledge for all knowledge is always useful in application or for the lesson it imparts.

Master chase took a low level black belt and shaped him into something better than I thought I was. Pushed him to challenge himself with likes of some very hard core individuals and expected nothing else than “try…then just do”. He hated people using vulgar four letter words like “cant”.

He took kids, mine included, and tried to impart into them understanding that sometimes you need to follow whats in front of you until you find your own way, and then make that way with truth and purpose. His Dojo floor was always open as was his heart. He was not afraid to tell you like it is, but he did not belittle or insult you.

Days turned into weeks, weeks into months then years.

While out training with others I would hear how he would tell others about me, and how to deal with my passion. Not to be a barrier, but to remove them. Many doors were open to me thanks to his candor.

On the day I tested for 5th, even with a couple that expressed doubts, he approved it and then said, and now your training truly begins.

For now I had a responsibility, one he had lived to the fullest and expected of everyone.

There is no cant.

It begins and ends with courtesy.

Overtime he began to call me “son”. I didn’t realize how important that is and was at the time. He wasnt just my sensei, my teacher, he was the dad I didnt know I needed.

I wish for so many things that could have been with him, but those gifts he left me with…not the stick he corrected our stances with, not the shelves of reading material or VHS tapes and DVDs for me to dive into…but the knowledge is also mine to share because thats what he did. Not just of the Martial Way- but of respect, discipline, honor, and everyone deserves courtesy.

And also his respect and love.

Ill miss you dad. Rest in Power.

Osu.

Meanwhile at the dojo…

07/16/2026

Willowick City has closed all public recreational programming for the next two days.
Parma City has closed all pools within the city today.

I was informed by officials in both cities that the air quality is a danger.

With that I am closing classes off for the rest of the week (Thursday 7/16 and Friday 7/17).

I will see about having a Make up class in Parma VFW this coming week Monday July 20th.

I will let everyone know on Friday.

Sensei.
