Sunday we officially ended our trip and spent the whole day (and then some) traveling back to South Dakota from Athens! We all had a great time, learned A LOT, and miss Europe, but it did feel good to be home 😊

On Friday and Saturday we spent two very relaxing days in and around Chania, still on the island of Crete. We left Heraklion and stopped at the village of Rethymno for some shoppingg and free time to explore. It was a beautiful town with lots of Venetian architecture and features! One of the highlights was stopping at a famous baklava shop and we got to learn about phyllo dough and how it’s made and used to make tasty treats.

In Chania we explored the city center and saw one of the ports used by the Venetians. On Saturday we enjoyed our last full day in Greece and took it easy and enjoyed swimming and relaxing on the beach. Then we hopped on a plane to head back to Athens to prepare for the end of the trip.

On Thursday we took a scenic drive along the coast of the island to hop on a boat to tour Spinalonga Island. Spinalonga was an island where the Venetians and Ottomans all had control at one point. Once Greece was formed it was used as a l***r colony until 1957.

On the way back to Heraklion we stopped in the village of Agios Nicholaus had some free time to shop, easy lunch, sit on the beach, and go swimming!

On Wednesday we took a short flight and flew to the Greek Island of Crete. We landed in Heraklion and toured the Knossos Palace ruins, prehistoric ruins of the Minoan people. Some people think this palace inspired the Greek Myth of the Labryinth and Minotaur!

On Tuesday, we spent the whole day in Athens! Our morning started with a driving tour of the city, where she pointed of different temples, important buildings like the parliament and first university, and told us about the history of the city and how Greece formed as a country. This included a stop at the olympic stadium, where the Olympic Torch gets lit and starts its journey!

After the driving tour, we trekked up with the top of the Acropolis! There we saw the Parthenon, Nike temple, and the other ruins. This is one of the best preserved sites in Greece and they are actively working on restoring it. Many of the things you see are replicas in the restoration, they keep the originals in the museum to protect the ruins and artifacts, which we got to see later!

After the museum we explored and shopped around the Plaka district in Athens. After returning to our hotel, some of us stayed up on the rooftop to watch the sunset and see the acropolis lit up at night!D
