-- 2020 National Championship has been cancelled --

July 15th, 2020

Dear Coaches, Bowlers and Parents,

It is with great disappointment to report the cancellation of the 2020 U.S. High School Bowling National Championship. While we've been fighting to keep this year's National Championship going, a combination of further difficult news today has now made it impossible to bring you this tournament.

Earlier today, the USBC canceled their remaining 2020 national tournaments. We have always been a USBC certified tournament and we respect the USBC's perspective regarding COVID-19. We also just received discouraging news from local health department regarding the escalating COVID-19 infection numbers. As a result, we feel it is in the best interest of bowlers, coaches and parents to cancel this year's event.

Because of the excellent relationship we have with Poelking Lanes - South, the 2021 U.S. High School Bowling National Championship will be hosted in Dayton, Ohio at Poelking Lanes - South. The tentative date for next year's tournament will be June 19-21, 2021.

This pandemic has been especially hard on this year's graduating seniors. We wish all the senior national finalists could have put their skills to the test in this season's final high school tournament. As to all our national finalists, you should take pride in knowing that you earned your spot in the 2020 National Championship, and no one can take that away from you.

Regarding refunds, everyone's entry fees will start being processed for refund right away in the way they were paid. Credit card payments will have their entry fee refunded to their credit card, while those who paid by check will have refund checks mailed to them. Once processed, credit card refunds will be confirmed by e-mail to the credit card holder. If anyone has specific requests regarding their entry fees, please contact me by e-mail at [email protected] .

Lastly, I would like to personally thank all of you that entered the 2020 National Championship!! We at the U.S. High School Bowling Foundation hope you all stay safe and healthy and have a successful 2020/2021 season.

Sincerely,

Michael Nyitray
President, U.S. High School Bowling Foundation

Great news, the 2020 U.S. High School Bowling National Championship is still on!

Here of the modifications we have made to accommodate local COVIID-19 protocols as of 6/10/20. We will continue to make any necessary adjustments so to provide the safest bowling environment possible.

1) The 2020 National Championship participation has been reduced by 50% to not exceed 50% building occupancy. That means there will be no more than 42 total teams across two qualifying shifts.

2) There will only be one team per pair of lanes, versus the traditional two teams per pair. This greatly reduce physical interaction of competitors and accelerate the pace of play.

3) Also new to the National Championship system, teams will stay on the same lanes throughout qualifying rounds, versus the traditional changing of lanes after every game. This will also greatly reduce physical interaction of competitors and spectators.

4) There will be no formal check-in before each qualifying rounds. Rather, all coaches will be informed of their lane assignments via text/email, where they will take their team directly to their assigned lanes upon entering the bowling center.

5) Entry into the bowling center before each shift will be "staggered". This means bowlers assigned on every other pair (1st pair, 3rd pair, etc.) will allowed in first. Ten minutes later, the remaining bowlers from 2nd pair, 4th pair, etc. will then enter. More information on this will be delivered to registered coaches as we get closer to the tournament date.

SPECTATORS - All spectators and non-bowling personnel will be strongly encouraged to wear masks whenever they are in the bowling center. Admission fees will be waived for they 2020 National championships in promotion of COVID-19 safety protocols.

REFUNDS - Since the U.S. High School Bowling National Championship was introduced in 2016, we have always provided a 100% entry fee refund no questions asked. The only requirement is that withdrawal take place prior to 48 hours before of the start of the tournament.

We have made major modifications to this year's format, including the reduction of the entire tournament's field, to no more than 50% occupancy, as well as with accompanying spectators. We have been fully compliant with all CDC and health department guidelines, and will continue to do so.

As of this post there are only four (4) Team spots available. Entries will accepted first come, first served. Any Team entries received AFTER the field is filled will be placed on Stand-By in the order they were received.

July 8 - We've already made several changes to improve the bowler and spectator experience. First, the person previously in charge of lane assignments/scheduling has been relieved of those duties. I've taken that part over and stated to our staff that we will only make small lane moves. Good for bowlers with tons of bowling bags as well as for spectators.

Next, we're currently working with a software specialist to create tournament software specifically for the National Championship. They already have my "must have" list as well as my "wish list". I am really excited about what we will have for 2020 Nationals!

Because of the behavior of a few, we have no choice but to hire on site security. They will be connected with the host city's police department to ensure compliance with the law. That should help keep things calm.

We've already been in touch with next year's venue and discussed their Fire Marshall protocols. Because most bowling centers are not built to handle a tournament like our National Championship will need to pre-sell daily admission passes and coordinate those numbers with the Fire Marshall. We will proactively work with the Fire Marshall before and during the tournament. Much has already been done to address the crowding issues.

The high school bowing National Championship is a great tournament for many reasons. The only negatives stem from infrastructure and overcrowding. We're updating that infrastructure with small lane moves, more tournament staff and with software designed to handle the size and format of our event. Next year's National Championship will be smoothest ever. Thank you to everyone for being a part of the U.S. High School Bowling National Championship journey!
