Begin to set up daily habits and routines that develop study skills, time management, healthy perspectives, and emotional strength.
For example, the time following dismissal should immediately be used for homework completion.
Sports and after-school activities are another story, but if kids are home, complete homework while it’s still fresh in their minds.
Waiting for “later” hurts in more ways than one: they forget, they are tired, their energy fades, and motivation is gone. A strongly recommended daily habit is to utilize the time immediately following dismissal.
If you don’t have that luxury, tackle the task as soon as you get home from wherever you are.
Another recommended routine is simple: just go through your day, organize your backpack, throw out unused or no longer needed material, stay neat, and stay organized. Just by spending 5 minutes reflecting and going back through the material of each class, you stay fresh, things pop up that you may have forgotten, and you’re naturally and inadvertently “studying.”
Another simple routine is to just talk about the day, start at homeroom, and go through each period.
What did you do in each class? Make any new friends? How was lunch? Any conflicts today? Drama? Who’s your favorite teacher? Who’s your least favorite teacher?
Just talk.
And finally, make sleep a priority. Rest and let your body repair so that you can wake up early and do it all again, re-energized!
Good luck and all the best, Ray.
