Many people have heard of executive functions but aren't really sure what they are. Simply defined, executive functions are a set of mental skills that helps a person complete tasks. They include skills like working memory, emotional control, and organization, and they help us learn, work, and function in our daily lives. Students who struggle with executive functions often find it difficult to learn because they struggle with things like staying focused, handling emotions, finding materials, following directions, or making good choices. The following pictures outline eight executive functions along with their characteristics and challenges.

When you have kids with dyslexia or any challenging learning differences, you may witness something called after school restraint collapse. They've held in their emotions and held it together ALL day in school. When they get home, they seemingly unleash. This can look like meltdowns, low patience, low energy or trigger arguments with caregivers and siblings. Even a simple request to sit down and complete homework can feel like a heavy lift to kids.

Sound familiar?

Kids who experience after school restraint collapse may need some downtime. Getting a drink and a snack, fresh air, connection with you, and simply just quiet space before jumping into homework are things we can be mindful of when it comes to this situation. In the world of busy schedules, it can be challenging for families, but when we look at it through the lens of a child, offering that time to unwind will pay off. If you are seeing after school restraint collapse, I recommend chatting with the teachers who work with your child during the school day.

IT’S SUMMER TIME, EVERYONE! Don’t let your child’s literacy skills fall by the wayside! Now is the time to get a jumpstart in helping your child! I can definitely help.

I am a certified dyslexia specialist. My background is in structured literacy therapy (Orton Gillingham). I have also completed training from IMSE, Institute for multi-sensory Education.

By offering remediation therapy at excellent rates, I am able to serve children who wouldn’t otherwise be able to afford intervention. Therapy sessions have a phonics emphasis, however I incorporate vocabulary, morphology, comprehension, etc. This ensures that sessions are robust, yet very engaging. Games are included in each session!

Because I know that my students often struggle with anxiety and self-esteem issues, I operate from a strengths-based perspective and intentionally discuss areas of concern (if they choose to) and help my students develop coping skills.

I work online and in person at my office in Park Ridge, NJ with morning and afternoon availability. I currently have openings! Consultations are always free!
