It's been sitting on my calendar for months. I'd look at it once in a while and think, that's a long way off...and then it popped up today for the final time, Mallory's last day.

Mallory, you've been THE ABSOLUTE BEST intern this support staff could've asked for! There is no one else I would've wanted to do this summer with!

I appreciate your logical and common sense approach to projects, problems and life in general. Your willingness to take on unexpected responsibilities and tasks speaks volumes. You're motivated and independent but not afraid to gather together and work as a team. You may not realize it, but the little things you do make people feel heard, recognized and welcome.

I will miss:
🤣your dry humor and sharp wit-both languages I adore.
🤔our brainstorming sessions-we really need to pitch our business model to Shark Tank!
😆your crazy goat and sibling stories-sorry Blake and Miranda!
🧐hearing "Linda, look what I found!" and "Hey, Linda! How about if we did...?"

The good and the hard parts of raising chickens.

The good: I found my first eggs! They’re quite small right now because they’re pullet eggs, but it was still pretty exciting to open the nesting box and find them. The first eggs laid by young hens are usually smaller than normal eggs because the hen’s reproductive system is still maturing. They are completely safe to eat as long as they are handled and stored properly. As the pullet matures, her eggs will generally become larger and more consistent in size. After watching these tricks grow from tiny, fluffy babies, getting those first eggs is a big milestone.

The bad: I also lost one of the chickens.

That’s one of the realities of raising livestock. Even when you’re doing your best to provide good care, sometimes things happen that are out of your control. It’s never easy, especially after watching them grow and getting attached to them. It’s all a part of raising animals.

Hello 4-H State Fair Livestock Exhibitors!
Congratulations on earning a trip to the Minnesota State Fair! A reminder that again this year you need to take your livestock interview test online prior to arriving at the State Fair! Exhibitors (except for dairy) will each view an educational video and then complete a specie specific test. The whole process will take 45-60 minutes to complete. Questions from the video will be included with specie specific information on the test.

Tests need to be completed by August 25 at 6 p.m. in order to be eligible for higher than a blue ribbon at the State Fair. Links to the video can be found on the 4-H Livestock Exhibitor Information page at z.umn.edu/StateFairLivestockInterviews. Select your correct specie and age group to view the video and participate in your livestock interview test. Be sure to enter in an email address when you begin and once you complete the test, a confirmation email will be sent to you.
