GED Prep registration and classes start on Tuesday, September 6th at 5:00 p.m. The $50.00 registration fee includes a GED Prep book, instruction from licensed teachers and GED practice tests. The children from JRES' Camp Hawk recently completed a service project where they made cat toys for Nuzzles and Co. Here is a cute video of some sweet, but mighty little kittens enjoying their new toys. Great Job Camp Hawk!

Inmates at the Summit County Jail are able to get their GED though the Park City Community Education/Adult Education program. The student pictured below are taking the Math section of the GED test. This is a great program that helps inmates create a fresh start in life.

GOOD NEIGHBORS HELP BUILD GREAT COMMUNITIES

In 2015, the PCSD’s Community Education Department began the Good Neighbor’s Program. This program was designed to bring English speaking volunteers from our community together with adults who want to learn English. Once the volunteer and learner were matched, they would set a schedule to meet and begin working on learning skills. Originally, the program would enlist a volunteer for anyone requesting assistance. Although the program was successful, it felt like there was more that could be done to bring greater learning opportunities to the students.

During Covid-19, the Community Education Department decided to revise and expand the Good Neighbor’s Program. Beginning 2021-2022 school year, volunteers will be matched with students who are currently enrolled in the Adult Education, English as a Second Language (ESL) classes. Students will be recommended by their instructors to the Good Neighbor’s Program and then matched with a volunteer who has similar interests. The pair can then set a schedule conducive to both parties.

ESL Instructors will be assigning bi-weekly homework in class and volunteers will be expected to assist their students complete the assignments. Students and volunteers can then set their own agenda. Subjects might include learning to understand the Driver License manual in order to prepare for the test, filling out rental or job applications, doing practice employment interviews, studying for the citizenship test or just meeting up to practice conversation skills. Community Education will provide all of the learning materials needed for any course of study.

In an effort to increase English reading and conversation skills, the Good Neighbor’s Program is encouraging volunteers and students create a book club. This can be done by one volunteer working with several students or a group of volunteers and students could agree to meet together monthly to read and discuss books. Books and discussion point will be provided; this is to ensure that the books are at the proper reading level for the students.
