Students in science classes benefit from David Stephens’ PLUS Grant entitled “Physics: Science Discovery Beyond Formulas.” With materials purchased, students in physics and engineering classes explore a variety of science concepts.

The Projectile Launcher is used with AP Physics students to mathematically predict trajectories using 2D kinematic equations. In addition, Engineering students can use the launcher and work to design and build automated catching systems to intercept projectiles.

With the Hoberman Sphere, AP Physics students can analyze conservation of angular momentum.
Engineering students can review the scissor-joint linkages and how these mechanisms can beused in deployable aerospace structures.

Additional resources purchased with this PLUS Grant include a NY Demo Balance, Centripetal Force Kit, Photogates, a Resonance Demo Kit, and Gravity Ball. Attached pictures demonstrate students learning to use each of these resources.

Launching Future Engineers

I want to express my gratitude for helping me establish groundwork for both my Physics and Engineering classes with these grant funds. The funds were used to purchase a number of item in Engineering and Physics that students will be able to use over a number of years. The usage of several of these items in both class settings will increase student exposure to these hands-on
learning activities.

Electrical Circuit Kits. Engineering students will learn introductory circuits as they develop skills
toward using Arduino kits in mechatronics and control systems.
Projectile Launcher. AP Physics students will be able to mathematically predict trajectories using
2D kinematic equations. Engineering students can work to design and build automated catching
systems to intercept projectiles.
PocketLab Voyager. AP Physics and Engineering students can creatively leverage the Voyager
sensor suite combined with building / prototype materials to invent numerous design approaches to
class project challenges.
Hoberman Sphere. AP Physics students can analyze conservation of angular momentum.
Engineering students can review the scissor-joint linkages and how these mechanisms can be
used in deployable aerospace structures.
