Playground- (n.) any place of freedom where one can run, climb, roll, and explore endlessly.
Best enjoyed with a truck in each hand.

Sand and rocks slid around us as we scrambled up the steep sides of the plateau.
We reached the top giggling and gasping for breath all at once.
And then, there they were.
Dozens of deep prints pressed into the rock.
Surrounded by pockets of sand covered in the undisturbed (and slightly more recent) tracks of birds and lizards it was easy to imagine the Theropods had just passed.
We had missed them by mere moments instead of millennia.
So we did then what we always do in such awesome and exhilarating places-
We played.
Hide and seek, and climbing trees, and dinosaur attack.
We laughed and squabbled over which tracks belonged to who.
“Mommy, remember that time we climbed up and saw those huge dino prints that were bigger than my head?!”
Yeah Baby. I remember.
Forever I do.
“The past beats inside me like a second heart.”

A Ukrainian Folktale.
Once upon a time a Sparrow flew down to a bush and said "Little Bush! Let me swing!"
But the bush said "I Won't!".
The Sparrow was angry and flew to the Goat.
"Goat, Goat! Go and nibble the bush, he won't let me swing!"
But the Goat said "I won't!"
So the sparrow flew to the Wolf.
"Wolf, Eat goat! He won't nibble the bush and the bush won't let me swing!"
But the Wolf said "I won't!"
And so it went.
The Sparrow went to the People to kill the wolf,
then to the Tartars to slay the People,
then to the Fire to burn the Tartars,
then to the Water to quench the Fire,
then to the Ox to drink the Water,
then to the Pole Axe to strike the Ox,
then to the Worms to gnaw the Pole Axe,
then to the Hen to peck the worms.
And each in turn they all said "I WON'T!!"
None would harm the others.
Finally, the Sparrow flew to the Sparrow-Hawk for he was known as The Pusher.
"Sparrow-Hawk! Come! Be The Pusher and seize the Hen!"
And Seize he did.
The Sparrow-hawk seized the Hen and the Hen began to peck the Worms, the Worms began to gnaw the Pole Axe, the Pole Axe began to strike the Ox, the Ox began to drink the Water, the Water began to quench the Fire, the Fire began to burn the Tartars, the Tartars began to slay the People, the People began to kill the Wolf, the Wolf began to eat the Goat, the Goat began to nibble the Bush, and the Bush cried out "Swing away, swing away, Swi-i-i-ing!".

Falling Man!
Way out in the Nevada Desert you’ll find this unique little petroglyph high up on a canyon wall.
I always try to use these ancient sites to try and imagine what life was like for ancient people. Their dreams, their struggles.
Falling Man was on a wall all by himself, near the edge of a pretty steep drop. I can’t help be wonder- was he an allegorical symbol of feeling lost and despair?
Or perhaps a simple- “Warning! Falling Hazard!”
Early National Park Signage 😜.
The jumbled up Rocks of this area are scattered with petroglyphs- making it the perfect place for a rock art seek and find! (IF you can convince the kids to stop crawling under and over the awesome boulders for “just two seconds!”)
“We shall not cease from exploration
And the end of all our exploring
Will be to arrive where we started
And know the place for the first time.”
-T.S. Elliot

“There are two ways of spreading light: to be the candle or the mirror that reflects it.”

It’s easy to feel invisible sometimes behind the dishwashing and baskets of laundry.
Truth is, those are mirror days- making it possible for your family to shine brighter.

We’ve made several attempts over the last few years to love Zion NP…and we’ve finally done it.
Somehow we managed to stumble in at a time with few people and no shuttles.
I admit, the view from Angel’s landing definitely isn’t over sold- so stunning.
Zion’s Angels Landing Trail – Permits required starting April 1, 2022. One of the most challenging, popular, and dangerous trails within Zion National Park, Angels Landing is also known as one of the most crowded. Starting this year, the NPS will issue hiking permits for this trail. If you’re planning a trip make sure to check the NPS site for instructions on entering the lottery for a permit.

“Mommy! I made a snow family!… except I haven’t made daddy’s yet- I got too coooooooold!”
We woke up to a delightfully slushy, snowy, mushy mess.
The kids couldn’t be happier!
Boondocking definitely comes with its own special challenges- but the pay-offs are totally worth it.
