Paramus CERT Prior emergency planning is the key to your safety. Every year we see the devastation across the country caused by storms, floods, tornados, and earthquakes.

Fortunately, we live in an area that does not experience many of these natural disasters although there have been several in the recent past. Man-made disasters resulting from fires, chemical spills, and terrorism could strike our community at any time. We do not have to live in fear of such occurrences but no one should assume that they will never happen in Paramus. Everyone should have an awareness of these potential hazards and have a plan to protect families, businesses, and property. The Paramus Office of Emergency Management is charged under federal and state regulations with the development of emergency plans to protect live and property and effectively manage any emergency or disaster. This website contains information to help you develop your own disaster plan for your family or business. Knowing beforehand what to do, where to go and how to get there may save your life. Please take the time to learn about emergency preparedness and discuss it with your family or employees. We all hope that we will never have to live through a disaster, but if we do, prior emergency planning is the key to your safety. Guy Picone
Emergency Management Coordinator

Yesterday evening, 10 members of Paramus CERT participated in a Mass Casualty Incident (MCI) drill involving a simulated bus accident. The exercise brought together approximately 100 emergency responders from Paramus and its mutual aid agencies to practice coordinating a large-scale, multi-agency emergency response.

Paramus CERT was tasked with establishing and managing the Staging Area, where incoming emergency units checked in, staged, and were deployed to the incident scene as requested by the Incident Commander. CERT members also maintained resource tracking and accountability throughout staging operations.

Following the completion of staging, CERT members were requested to respond to the incident scene to establish a Rehab Area, providing emergency personnel with a designated location to rest, hydrate, and recover.

Exercises like these play an important role in strengthening coordination and preparedness among emergency response agencies while providing valuable hands on training.

Thank you to all the role play actors, many of whom were local high school students and CERT members from neighboring communities We would also like to thank MERK for preparing dinner at the firehouse following the completion of the drill!

Update from the Mayor:

09/13/2026

Paramus Emergency Services are responding to multiple calls related to today’s storm.

The Paramus Fire Department, Police Department, Office of Emergency Management, Department of Public Works, and Shade Tree are all operating throughout the borough.

As always, thank you to our Paramus Dispatchers for all of your hard work coordinating calls and resources throughout the storm.

Storm Safety Reminders:

Never drive through flood-covered roadways. You can’t tell how deep the water is from behind the wheel. Turn Around, Don’t Drown.

If you lose power and are using a generator, NEVER operate it inside your home, garage, basement, or any enclosed area. Keep generators outdoors and away from doors, windows, and vents.

Never drive around road closed barricades, traffic cones, or into areas that have been blocked off. These closures are in place for your safety and the safety of emergency personnel on scene.

Please use caution while traveling and give emergency crews and DPW personnel plenty of room to work.

This morning, 8 members of Paramus CERT participated in a Staging Area Operations Drill, giving our members a refresher on establishing and operating a staging location during a simulated emergency.
During a major emergency, or when multiple smaller incidents occur at the same time, additional personnel and equipment may be needed to help maintain response capabilities within Paramus. Resources may be requested from neighboring municipalities, Bergen County, surrounding counties, or the State of New Jersey. A designated staging area provides a central location for these resources to check in, be organized and tracked, and remain ready for assignment until requested by Incident Command.

As part of today’s exercise, members established a full staging area using approximately 60 traffic cones, 10 barricades, designated signs for Police, Fire, EMS, and Special Operations, along with exit, speed limit, and directional arrow signage.

Training exercises like today’s help ensure our members remain familiar with staging operations and are prepared to assist when our community needs it most.

Paramus CERT is a 100% volunteer emergency response organization dedicated to supporting the Borough of Paramus, our first responders, and the community during emergencies, disasters, and other large-scale incidents.
