Banned Book Week at Bergen is running from October 5 through 11 to show students, faculty, and staff some of the literature that is simultaneously being challenged and celebrated.

The Sidney Silverman Library is collaborating with Bergenstages to host playreadings, movie nights, and other fun activities to expose students to classic, thought provoking stories.

Events include a playreading of “The Kite Runner” on October 5, a verbatim theatre of “Hunterdon” on October 7, and a cinema night screening George Orwell’s “1984” on October 8. Learn more about these campus events at bergen.edu/events.

Join us on October 27 for a reader's theatre production of IT CAN'T HAPPEN HERE presented by Bergenstages in collaboration with Bergen Alumni Theatre and the Ramapo College Theatre program. Based on the novel written by Sinclair Lewis, its themes of the destruction of democracy, autocratic leadership, and the consequences that transpire are relevant even today. First produced by the Federal Theatre Project, a part of the WPA, the play originally opened on October 27, 1936 in theatres all over the United States on the same day. The top ticket price in 1936 was .30¢, which will be the donation we will be asking at the door.
