You truly “grew up dojo”… just like I did.

From the time you were just days old, the dojo has been your second home. It’s where you learned to ride your bike, roller skate, flip, and so much more. Watching your slow and steady growth into the man and instructor you are today has been remarkable and inspiring.

You found a way to pursue your love of hockey, lacrosse, and now boxing, while never walking away from the martial arts. Through it all, you’ve always shown respect for the art that runs through your bloodline and stayed true to our dojo. So many get distracted along the way—but you never did.

This new chapter couldn’t have happened without you. From hanging every picture and shield, to laying the mats, painting, mopping, vacuuming, and doing countless jobs no one will ever see—you poured your heart into building this new home for generations to come.

I’m incredibly proud of the man you’ve become, the instructor you are, and the legacy you’re helping carry forward.

Some people come into your life for a season. Others become part of your legacy.

Thank you, Sensei Barone, for 25 years of unwavering dedication, loyalty, and friendship. From my very first class, you have stood beside me, and I truly could not have imagined this journey without you.

You are an exceptional martial artist, but what makes you truly special is your gift for teaching. Your ability to develop students, understand their journey, and guide them through the ranks is something that comes naturally to you. Some things simply can’t be taught, and your ability to pass down the art with skill, patience, and authenticity is truly inspiring.

Thank you for believing in my mission, for leading by example, and for helping shape generations of black belts. Our students, our school, and our family are better because of you.

The next chapter is an exciting one, and I’m grateful to have you by our side as we continue building the Tiger Karate Society legacy.

Tonight was a celebration of a legacy that began long before our doors opened in Paramus.

It started in the basement of my childhood home, where I watched my father, Professor Ronald Mertz, build something truly special. From there, he taught and inspired students throughout Emerson, River Vale, Park Ridge, Hillsdale, and Blauvelt, NY. For the past 22 years, Paramus has proudly become the next chapter in that story.

Tonight, black belts and students from every chapter of that journey came together to celebrate the opening of our new home at Paramus Park Mall. Looking around the room and seeing faces from decades of memories reminded me that The Dojo has never been about a building—it has always been about the people.

As the daughter who once ran around the dojo while my father taught all of you, standing here today as the head instructor was incredibly meaningful. Even more special was looking over and seeing history repeat itself—my own little ones running around the dojo while my oldest son, Sensei Jack, stood beside me teaching the next generation.

To the Mayor, Council, and the entire Paramus community, thank you for welcoming us and celebrating this milestone with us. Paramus has been an incredible home for more than two decades.

This town has supported us, believed in us, and allowed us to grow into a school that has helped shape thousands of lives through martial arts. Tonight was a celebration of our history, our values, and the incredible community that continues to stand beside us. We are deeply grateful for every family, every student, and every black belt who has been part of this journey.

Tonight honored our past, celebrated our present, and reminded us that our greatest chapters are still ahead.

Here’s to the future, our new home at Paramus Park Mall, and the generations still to come. ❤️🥋
