Good advice for first-time parents of freshman High Schoolers
New school year, new nerves 🎒 High school is a big transition for teens with new hallways, new pressures, and more independence. It can feel just as intimidating for parents.
Extension family life specialist Brittney Schrick shares her top tips:
✅ Set clear expectations early (homework before social time)
🗺️ Walk the schedule before day one if you can
❓ Ask lots of questions with the goal of listening, not correcting
🚫 Don’t overschedule, it can set kids up to fail
“It’s okay to be annoying in asking follow-up questions,” Schrick says, “but try to let your kids handle their own relationships, conflicts and teacher interactions as much as possible.”
