Good advice for first-time parents of freshman High Schoolers

New school year, new nerves 🎒 High school is a big transition for teens with new hallways, new pressures, and more independence. It can feel just as intimidating for parents.

Extension family life specialist Brittney Schrick shares her top tips:
✅ Set clear expectations early (homework before social time)

🗺️ Walk the schedule before day one if you can

❓ Ask lots of questions with the goal of listening, not correcting

🚫 Don’t overschedule, it can set kids up to fail

“It’s okay to be annoying in asking follow-up questions,” Schrick says, “but try to let your kids handle their own relationships, conflicts and teacher interactions as much as possible.”

💥HEAT SAFETY INFO—As the state enters several days of triple-digit heat, prepare now in case of a weather emergency. It is important to be ready if there is a power outage, or if your air conditioning fails. Look after one another, especially those within the vulnerable population. Keep an eye on the young, check on the elderly, and keep pets indoors or under cover and make sure they have plenty of water available that is NOT in a sunny location. Know the signs of heat illness. Practice heat safety if you must work in these conditions. Stay hydrated and get inside to cool down as often as possible. If you begin to feel unwell, TELL someone. Get to someplace cool. Be safe out there! ☀️

Is your lawn not looking it's best lately? You could have Fall Army Worms.

Armyworms have been confirmed locally, and they quickly spread to lawns, athletic fields, and golf courses. These caterpillars feed aggressively and can strip grass down to the stems in just a day or two—especially in bermudagrass.

Signs of Armyworm Damage:
🌱Grass suddenly appears drought-stressed or scalped
🌿Ragged or chewed leaf blades
🐛Clusters of greenish-brown caterpillars with light stripes
🐦Birds feeding heavily in the area

If you think you might have Armyworms, contact your local Extension Office for guidance on the best way to treat your property. Greene County Extension: (870) 236-6921
