WESTSIDE LEAGUE CHAMPS!

12/04/2018

It's busy down here at the Chico Mall, but there's space here if you need to drop in for some help today!

12/03/2018

I'm here at the Mall until about noon! Lots of kids here getting signed up for school! There are laptops and backpacks to pick up. We're really trying to set everyone up for the next several weeks.

World War One 11/30/2018

I don't know everything, but I know more about what Paradise High School is going to look like starting Monday and going until the Christmas Break.

All the work is going to be online. Communication, assignment and grading of that work will be done through a program they use at E-Learning called Edmentum. We'll sign you up on Monday at the Mall. There are certain times that certain groups of kids are scheduled to be there for Monday, but if you can't make those times, just show up when you can.

This is just temporary. We're going to be in some kind of building with classrooms in January. I expect to know more about that soon.

There will be laptops available at the Mall Monday, too. And for the next two and a half weeks, you'll work on your own and drop in to the Mall when/if you need to.

You won't need to be there everyday, and if you can't make it Monday, you can email the school and be signed up for the program from a distance. Details are going to be emailed to parents and put on the PHS Facebook.

They're working right now on getting students assigned to classes in Edmentum with the teacher they had before the fire. So if you were in my class before, you will be again.

I'm planning, personally, on being at our Mall location in the mornings before noon (I'll have basketball practice after that) if you want to see me, say hi, or need help with anything. I would really love to see as many of you as I can. I'm always available through this page and email.

I have a google doc linked here with the assignment I have planned for you guys for this time. Read the instructions and ask me any questions you have. Two things: you can do it all online, and I don't intend for anyone to do anything too intense. Honestly, I just want to be sure you guys get your credits and are able to graduate, so I had to do something, but grades and work aren't the most important thing right now, by a lot. I tried to create a project that I thought would be useful, interesting, and flexible. If it's not all those things, email me or message me here and we'll talk. I'll adjust to you right now. Get started now if you think that will help you. Wait until Monday if you need to.

EDIT: You can also add yourself into my Google Classroom: phmop20 is the add code.

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1XR3rhyDVAyNsgGXlSgJcN2stIfY3YdBx7kH4G9qhcXk/edit?usp=sharing

The assignment will be loaded into Edmentum sometime this weekend and ready for you guys on Monday.

Last thing: Your essays from the last unit we did are sitting in my classroom and I can't get to them. I could excuse you guys from that, but I think it might be better for people's grades to give them their test average on the test and put that in the gradebook. I'm looking for ways to help, so if that grade hurts you somehow, I'll just excuse you. No big thing.

I want nothing more than to just be in a classroom doing our regular thing. That's not available to us right now. Just know that if you're open and honest about what you need I'll adjust to that now and for the foreseeable future. I love and miss you all and look forward to seeing and hearing from you.

If you could share the post with friends, that would be incredibly helpful.

World War One World War One Independent Project First, let me say how much I miss you guys and can’t wait to get back to a real classroom with as many of you as can make it. I had the option to do independent study through Edmentum, like many of your other teachers. But I wanted to see if I could create som...

PARADISE BOBCAT BASKETBALL!

11/16/2018

Teachers and staff members are trying to get into contact with students and family as quickly as possible. We want to know that you're safe, where you are, and what you might need. We're trying to come up with a plan, as soon as possible, to keep Paradise kids in the area with their Paradise teachers.

We're not really quite sure what that looks like yet, but knowing where our kids are and what families' plans are helps us figure things out. For example, if we start setting up satellite classrooms in places like Chico, Oroville and Gridley while the town is being rebuilt, it helps to know how many kids are where and what they need.

We've encountered numbers that have been disconnected, numbers that are wrong numbers, and numbers with full voicemail boxes.

If you can, please send a message to this page. Especially if you haven't heard from anyone yet. Let me know where you're at and that you're safe. If your family knows their plans and you'd like to share, please do.

All Butte County schools are closed through December 3, and there will be some version of Paradise High School and other Paradise Unified School District schools up and running by then, in one form or another. Even if you've enrolled elsewhere because you weren't sure what to do, you can drop and enroll. And athletes who started winter sports seasons with us but enrolled elsewhere can finish those seasons with us.

We'll get there, everyone, if we stick together and look out for one another. It may take a while, but things will be some kind of normal again.

I love and miss you all, and can't wait to be back in a classroom with you again.

If you have any kind of need for support from FEMA, go today. Stand in the ridiculous line and get signed up immediately. It's first come, first served so don't wait.

Any kind of displacement, even if your home is standing, you can get support.

If you're displaced in Chico, breakfast and lunch are available to anyone under 18. Just come eat.

11/10/2018

Edit: Mr Lighthall has scheduled a vigil and get together for PHS students and families, and our affected friends at Ridgeview and Honey Run. 5pm at PV, Tuesday. Please get the word out. I will be there. I would really like to see as many of you as is practical.

To all my kids and their families:

Here's what I've heard so far. Paradise High School still stands! I don't think anyone has any idea of when families can come back up the ridge, let alone when we might be able to be in class together again.

Please know that I'm thinking of all of you, and that watching our town and our people suffer to this extent is incredibly difficult.

It would help a lot to know that my students were safe and accounted for, so if you see this and could comment to let me know that you're safe, I would really like to hear it. I've gotten a handful of emails that have assuaged that worry somewhat. But I hate having so much of this up in the air.

I live in Chico and am not far from many of the shelters, so if you need anything, I want to help.

Please stay safe and know how much I care.

I was out today because my daughter was sick. She's feeling better, and, as I finish up everyone's grades for the grade report coming out soon, she is demanding I give everyone good grades.

So, you're welcome from Lorelei...

Industrial Revolution--Urban Game 10/31/2018

Students in my US class looking for the link for potential extra credit for the Urban Game we played today, here's the link:

http://www.thecaveonline.com/APEH/TheUrbanGame.htm

There's a list at the very front featuring the same items we plotted in the game. Plot those in a second city on the back of your first page to receive a few points of extra credit.

If any of you really enjoyed the game, or felt up to the challenge at least, you should consider a career in City and Regional Planning!

Industrial Revolution--Urban Game Each student should have a large piece of butcher block paper (15x20).  They should use a pencil for this activity (color pencils are optional).

Some students wrote it down in class today, but for any student that wants to prepare for the "full essay" option on the test, here's the test question:

Full Essay: By the late 1700s, many nations were ripe for revolution against the old order. Use information from the unit to prove or refute this statement, pulling examples from many of the topics we studied.

Frosh Boys Basketball players can click this link on their phones to join Remind for the team. I don't believe you have to put the app on your phone, but by joining you can get text reminders of games, practices and other important information. You also don't have to give out your phone number, as the Remind app becomes the go between for us.

We'll begin workouts again this week, Tuesdays and Thursdays (back to school night excepted) 7 to 9 at the High School gym. Kids playing other school sports are, of course, excused.

Welcome to Mr Sutter’s Class

Inspired by my own teachers at Paradise High School, where I graduated in 2002, I left Paradise and attended Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, until 2006, graduating with a BA in History and a minor in German. I started work on my teaching credential the following year at Chico State, and began working at Los Molinos Elementary School as a 6/7/8 History and PE teacher in 2007. I also coached Basketball, Soccer, and other sports, and taught AVID while I was there.

In 2016 I left Los Mo and came home to Paradise, where I spent two years working at Honey Run Academy, the Community Day School for Paradise Unified. Here, I was able to teach and support many of the most vulnerable and troubled young people on the Ridge; I considered this an honor and treasure the relationships I built with students and staff.

Beginning in 2018 I will move to Paradise High School, teaching US and World History and coaching Basketball. This, as well, I consider an honor. To be of service to my community in this way was my goal back when I first dreamed of teaching. I am deeply grateful and excited for the opportunity to provide the caring and support our students need growing up in a town that can be as difficult as it is beautiful.

Here, you are always my student, I am always your teacher. My door is always open.
