55 Civil Air Patrol cadets. 55 opportunities to get on the air.

The Sin City Repeater Group, Inc. spent Tuesday evening with the Henderson Hawks, 65th Air Rescue Squadron of the Civil Air Patrol, giving 55 cadets a hands-on introduction to amateur radio.

This was not a sage on the stage presentation. Every cadet had an opportunity to use a radio and experience two-way communications firsthand.

One of the standout moments came during the HF demonstration on 20m. As cadets listened to stations on the Maritime Mobile Service Net, faces around the room lit up. Amateur radio suddenly became real: real operators, real distances, real-time communications.

The success of the evening started before anyone turned on a radio. On Monday night, participating SCRG members held a focused 30-minute planning meeting to assign responsibilities, coordinate equipment and demonstrations, discuss strategies for working with youth, and review youth protection expectations. That preparation showed Tuesday night.

A special thank you goes to Troy KK7NWE, whose involvement with the Henderson Hawks made this opportunity possible and who invited SCRG to participate.

SCRG also thanks Kirk NO7BS, Mike W7MTV, Bill N4NJJ, Chris KI7VLP, Ian K6IBX, and Dan W7IVK for representing the club in person.

Jason WV3V, JD KI7EUF, Bob KK7VGQ, and Shane KM7CIP also played an important role from elsewhere, making themselves available on the repeaters so that when cadets keyed a microphone, somebody answered.

This is what growing amateur radio in Las Vegas, Henderson, and Southern Nevada looks like: plan well, show up, create opportunities, and put radios into people’s hands.

1,525 QSOs. 31 DXCC entities. 49 states. Six continents.

K7F is officially in the books.

From August 9 through August 17, the Sin City Repeater Group activated K7F for the Saint Maximilian Kolbe Special Event Station, and amateur radio operators around the world answered the call.

The final numbers:

• 1,525 QSOs
• 1,260 unique callsigns
• 31 DXCC entities
• 49 of 50 U.S. states
• All six inhabited continents
• Most-worked non-U.S. DXCC entity: Canada, with 33 QSOs
• Furthest contact: ZS1BHJ in South Africa, approximately 9,800 miles from Las Vegas

And the one that got away?

Vermont.

We came one state short of Worked All States.

But K7F was about more than filling a logbook.

Special Event Stations give amateur radio operators a common goal without requiring everyone to be in the same place at the same time. People have careers, families, side hustles, and responsibilities outside the hobby. Meaningful participation in amateur radio should not require putting the rest of your life on hold.

Operate for an hour after work. Make contacts from home. Join an in-person event when you can. Try a new band or mode. Help another operator get on the air.

It all contributes.

That is the kind of amateur radio community we are building at the Sin City Repeater Group: active, inclusive, curious, and focused on building operators up.

We will begin mailing all properly received SASE requests on October 1, 2026.

Last night, members of the Sin City Repeater Group, Inc. brought amateur radio directly into the community with a public demonstration at a local Catholic parish in honor of Saint Maximilian Kolbe, OFM Conv., priest, martyr, and patron saint of amateur radio operators.

Operating as special event station K7F, our members introduced parishioners and visitors to amateur radio, demonstrated HF communications, and shared the important role amateur radio continues to play in public service, emergency communications, technical education, and community preparedness.

We had hoped to make considerably more contacts together during the demonstration. Mother Nature had other plans.

In true Murphy’s Law fashion, Southern Nevada, a place where measurable rain can be a noteworthy event by itself, was surrounded by thunderstorms and significant electrical activity throughout much of our operating period. The resulting atmospheric noise made HF communications considerably more difficult.

And we learned this morning just how unusual the weather around us actually was. Reports from the region are describing extraordinary rainfall roughly 50 miles south of our operating location, with portions of southern Clark County experiencing rainfall and flooding associated with what has been characterized as an exceptionally rare, approximately 1-in-1,000-year precipitation event.

So, naturally, the desert decided to produce one of its most unusual weather events on the evening we scheduled a public HF demonstration.

But in many ways, that made the demonstration more authentic.

Amateur radio is not built around perfect conditions. Operators learn to communicate despite weather, propagation, interference, infrastructure failures, equipment limitations, and changing circumstances. Developing those skills, and maintaining communications systems that can function when conditions are less than ideal, is a major part of amateur radio’s continuing public-service value.

Despite the storms and fewer contacts than we had hoped for, the evening accomplished something more important. We put amateur radio in front of the public, introduced people to the hobby, demonstrated its connection to emergency preparedness and public service, spent time together as a club, and honored a saint who understood the power of communications technology as a tool for service and outreach.

Thank you to everyone who operated, helped with setup, stopped by, or took the time to learn more about amateur radio.

Following the success of its previous K7F special event station, the Sin City Repeater Group, Inc. will activate K7F from August 9 through August 17, 2026, to commemorate the Memorial of Saint Maximilian Kolbe, Priest and Martyr.

The group’s previous March 2026 K7F activation commemorated the 250th anniversary of Father Francisco Garcés’ entrance into present-day Nevada. During that event, operators contacted all 50 states within three days and completed contacts with amateur radio operators in more than 50 countries.

The August activation will honor Saint Maximilian Kolbe, OFM Conv., a Polish Roman Catholic priest, Conventual Franciscan friar, missionary, publisher, and amateur radio operator. Kolbe held the amateur radio call sign SP3RN and is recognized as the patron saint of amateur radio operators.

In 1941, while imprisoned at the German N**i concentration camp Auschwitz, Kolbe volunteered to take the place of fellow prisoner Franciszek Gajowniczek, who had been selected to die by starvation. After more than two weeks in a starvation bunker, Kolbe was killed by lethal injection on August 14, 1941.

Members of the Sin City Repeater Group will operate K7F at various times throughout the event on amateur radio bands between 40 and 10 meters. Operations will include SSB, FT8, and FT4 as band conditions and applicable band privileges permit.

QSL Information

Amateur radio operators requesting a direct QSL card must include their own QSL card and a self-addressed, stamped envelope.

All requests must be received by Thursday, September 17, 2026. Return QSL cards will begin mailing on Thursday, October 1, 2026.
