At Papillion La Vista Community Schools (PLC Schools), a strong team of staff, parents and community members are committed to being known for greatness. Located just south of Omaha, Papillion La Vista Community School residents benefit from a small town atmosphere while still having all of the conveniences of a metropolitan area. Serving over 11,000 students, Papillion La Vista is the

fourth largest district in Nebraska. The District covers approximately 30 square miles of both urban and rural areas and is comprised of 14 elementary schools, two junior high schools, two high schools and one alternative program. All of our elementary and secondary schools are fully accredited through the Department of Education and the North Central Association. In 2010, the District received accreditation from the AdvancED Accreditation Commission. This is a prestigious honor held by only select districts throughout the country. Papillion La Vista Community Schools prides itself on meeting the individual needs of all students through a wide range of opportunities provided through an extensive co-curricular and extracurricular program. Excellence in the District can be best displayed through a strong partnership with parents and community. While PLC Schools offers neighborhood schools, it prides itself on district-wide curriculum and high academic standards for all students

📖 Monsters, mead halls, and heroism! Students at Papillion La Vista South High School are digging into one of literature's oldest tales in British Literature and Composition. As Mr. Spangler leads students through Beowulf, they'll break down everything from Old English to the reasoning behind the character motivations in the epic poem.

🐇🥕 First grade students in Ms. Hornbaker's class at G. Stanley Hall Elementary recently learned the classic tale about Peter Rabbit getting into Mr. McGregor's garden! As part of their comprehension learning and vocabulary, they learned the meaning of the word "mischief."

Students completed a worksheet where they could draw something that demonstrated mischief (like Peter Rabbit sneaking under the fence) and also draw something that was their favorite part of the story. Classic tales and other stories are an engaging way for younger students to improve vocabulary and understanding of the elements of a story while integrating other concepts and contextual knowledge.

👑 Students in Mr. Curry's World Civilizations class at Papillion La Vista High School kicked off the semester learning about feudalism in a visual way. Students are unpacking the political and economic system that structured medieval society — lords, vassals, knights, and serfs — and were assigned roles as an introduction to how the system worked. With the "lords" retaining their high position (in desks), Mr. Curry demonstrated the hierarchy through examples like distribution of crops. That's a visual that will stick!

🎶🎷 Shout-out to the PLCS elementary band teachers for making music accessible! Following an instrument rental fair last week where families could select their instruments for the year, Ms. Deicke (Trumble Park, Bell, Prairie Queen, and Golden Hills) spearheaded an evening for her incoming band students to learn the fundamentals before band practice starts. Ms. Deicke brought in teachers and former students to show new students how to assemble their instruments, demonstrate proper hand position and posture, and get a start playing their first notes!

Flutes, clarinets, saxophones, trumpets, trombones - the workshop set students on a foundation of skills and information that will help them in their music instruction at school. "By giving students this head start," Ms. Deicke said, "we can dive directly into meaningful learning when classes begin during the school day."

Thanks to the PLCS music teachers who serve all the elementary buildings! In addition to Ms. Deicke at her four schools, these teachers helped host the instrumental rental night so each family could find the instrument that was the right fit for them:

🧪 Sometimes things don't go as planned, and there's still something to be learned from that! In Mr. Kahm's Chemistry class at Papillion La Vista South High School, students tested three chemical reactions as a part of their introduction to the Claim-Evidence-Reasoning (C-E-R) model used to answer questions in science. Students were given worksheets to go through each process step-by-step, practicing the essential lab procedures like establishing a thorough understanding of the directions before moving forward. Even so, students didn't always get the expected reaction.

🥽 The possibility of "failed" results is built into the lesson, or as Mr. Kahm summarizes, "Our results are our results." The lab introduces how variants can change an outcome, whether the strength of a solution or mis-ordered steps in the process. In the class periods following the lab, Mr. Kahm reiterates the C-E-R model. "It is a problem solving technique used to help students answer questions and provide evidence for their answers as well as an explanation as to how that evidence supports their claim," he explains. While a true lab would repeat the experiment multiple times to identify trends, in class, they use the model to make observations of their experiments and analyze the data through reasoning together.
