Aronia melanocarpa is probably my favorite medicinal food! These little jewels are almost black because of a high concentration of anthocyanins, those colorful flavonoids that are antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, cell-growth normalizing, and broad-spectrum bioprotective. They also contain tonic/astringent proanthocyanidins (PAC and OPC) that have an affinity for the heart, arteries, and microcirculation throughout the body, brain, and eyes. Round it out with more flavonoids, organic acids, and phenolic acids, and you have a tart, nutrient-dense berry with a broad array of beneficial constituents that works beautifully in smoothies, porridge, and baked goods.

Rubus idaeus subsp. strigosus is our native high-elevation Raspberry here in the Colorado Rockies. The leaves are especially rich in tonic/astringent ellagitannins (and their metabolite, ellagic acid), flavonoids, and other polyphenols with antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and broad-spectrum bioprotective properties. Besides being a classic "women's tonic" this herb is a mineral-rich nutritive for all, and can help tonify mucous membranes in the digestive system. Add it to your infusions for leaky gut syndrome.

It’s that time again! Our annual Herbal Constituents webinar + Q&A, where we explore functional phytochemistry in the context of clinical and medical herbalism, is right around the corner.
This year’s new topic is Ginger & Turmeric: A Classic Pair.
We’ll explore the art and science of building formulas around botanical pairs like Ginger and Turmeric—using their complementary chemistry, actions, energetics, and extraction behavior to guide a formula’s synergy, flavor and aroma balance, and therapeutic direction.
Join us for one of two free sessions on Thursday, August 20:
11:00 AM MDT (UTC−6) or 6:00 PM MDT
