So a little background on me, with a last name like Smith and a 2nd career in aviation (first IT Engineer) how could I not be Aerosmith Aviation, it definitely fit, not only name wise but with my Boston roots. I grew up in Westwood MA in the 70/80’s and there were always rumors floating around about a famous rock band singer who was visiting our prestigious Westwood lodge, never did see him coming and going… then my first concert @ 16 years old in Worcester MA 1983, yup Aerosmith! My neighbor brought out this funny brown album cover with all these toys on it and played me sweet emotions 4 years earlier and I was hooked, what a sound and they were local, well kind of, just north across the boarder where my grandpa had a farm, NH and we went swimming summers in lake Winnipesakke. What great times. One year my Mom looked down at here 5 kids after a long day at the lake and said gas to get home or ice cream, we all yelled ice cream and enjoyed every lick while Mom drove home going 50mph in the 1972 Suburban the whole trip back to Westwood so we would make it and we did. Great times and memories.
Cheers and Happy New Year!

I did my first ring wash on my Duke TIO-541 engines with a good start and engine run after leaving Chemtool B12 in for run up, then drain and replace oil/filter. All cylinders pushed wash through rings, 1 on each side locked up but a little back and forth with pressure worked it through. 3 flights since and oil pressure and blow by seems better, let’s see if the roughly 1qt per 3hrs of flight time goes down, stay tuned!
My 73 172L with O-320 reman from Penn Yan Aero 4 years 800 plus hrs, nothing replaced, oil clean to 100hrs. Why? keeping it lean, except start and TO, while teaching many students.

Need to start posting more, that’s my new year resolution!
Not often you see surface temps and Fl temps the same!

5 in the pan and 1 quart in the filter is all you need. These guys test everything and I have found that 5 quarts of oil in most Lycoming’s and Continental’s is plenty to lubricate and cool, anymore is usually blown out the breather and robbing the engine (A LOT) of performance!

50 lop is a good standard number, it’s really about the richest/hottest cht and tit under 1650 that counts. I will tolerate the richest cylinder near peak egt if its cht is below 375. Remember peak egt is where all fuel/air mixture burns perfectly but cylinder gets to hot, so we have to cool with fuel(ROP) or Air(LOP). My 172 carb engine runs 3 cylinders lop and 1 cylinder near peak @ 6GPH but I have to keep it under 2400rpm to keep that cylinder under 375. It has 800 hrs on it and still looks new…. TIO-540 engine needs ignition parts working perfect and Mags timed yearly to run smooth LOP.
The last 40 years have seen two big errors for lop piston ops. 1. factory valve tolerance is weak (getting much better over the past 10years) but 1 out of 7 factory cylinder exhaust valves will fail approx 700hrs running rich or lean because it’s imperfect, when a simple valve job on that cylinder will fix it for $1,200 and the owner opps to replace them all for $22K.
2. Running LOP builds up lead deposits on plugs and exhaust valve seats and a compression test of 80lbs can’t push the valve down to seal the chamber so the test shows 52 compression and Mx replaces a perfectly good cylinder which under normal combustion of 800lbs of pressure closes the valve and seals off lead deposit perfectly. I borescope my cylinders every annual or 100hrs to know how they are doing, round bullseye on top they are good to go no matter what a low compression reading says.
Taking off on a grass (sand) strip with the Duke, no problem, we do not call it the beast for nothing!
