“You didn’t think you should get in but you deserve it—it’s amazing.”
That’s what friends and family of artist Tristan Mor told her when they saw her piece in our Main Gallery for the Southern Watercolor Society’s Small Works Watermedia exhibition.
Tristan took up watercolor after retiring from library support services, beginning with Nina Freeman at in Tallahassee, FL. During the COVID-19 pandemic, she spent time walking in the St. Marks National Wildlife Refuges, collecting fallen leaves.
“Dying, decaying, insect-eaten leaves seemed an appropriate subject for the time we were in. Each leaf was exquisitely beautiful in and of itself, a thing to contemplate, a thing to appreciate. Accurately portraying their colors in a painting was a challenge I embraced.
In the case of ‘Quercus and Actias’, a Luna moth cocoon is usually found on the ground attached to the leaves the caterpillar was feeding on it when it had the urge to cocoon itself. In my paintings, I want to draw attention to things that go unnoticed or ignored. As our lives become more urban and online, we lose our connection to nature and the planet that supports us.”
As you make your way around the gallery, you’ll see pieces depicting different subjects, techniques, and experiences from artists across the country. That’s what makes this exhibit one of our favorites.
On display through July 25. Visit us Tuesday-Saturday, 10am-5pm. Open until 7pm on Fridays.

Step into the mesmerizing world of indigo with an organic dye vat prepared by instructor Sydni Gause.
In this hands-on workshop, you’ll explore the art of Shibori, a traditional Japanese resist-dyeing technique, as you fold, tie, and bundle your own 21x21 cotton bandana into unique patterns. Once your fabric is prepared, you’ll immerse it in a rich indigo vat and watch the magic unfold as the cloth transforms from white to vibrant shades of blue before your eyes.
Participants will have the opportunity to dip their bandanas multiple times to build deeper, more dramatic hues while learning about the fascinating process and chemistry behind maintaining an organic indigo vat. No two creations will be alike!
