The goal wasn't to escape life... it was to relax enough to forget what day it is. πŸŒŠβ˜€οΈ

Turns out, that's a pretty good reminder to slow down.

Great Sand Dunes NPP is exactly what I imagine walking through thr desert in Egypt would be like.

Here's what you need to know:
1️⃣ We visited at the end of July and both creek beds were essentially gone. So walking TO the bottom of the dune is .7 miles. And to the high dune is almost 1.5 miles.
2️⃣ Walking on the sand is 10x harder than anything else. Expect it to take much, much longer than a regular walk.
3️⃣ Sand is HOT to walk on. Wear some sort of shoe. Don't expect to walk barefoot, it will burn. Even walking in socks is okay.
4️⃣ Arrive early. Obviously this depends on the time of year but a summer visit requires an early arrival, like before 8am. It is hot and there is no shade.
5️⃣ Rent a sand sled before you arrive at the park, the park doesn't rent them. Stick with a sand sled (not the sand board, like snowboarding).
6️⃣ Pack water.
7️⃣ Consider a mask to keep the sand out of your mouth/eyes.

One simple camping item has made a big difference for our family: walkie-talkies. πŸ’š

They give kids a little independence while helping everyone feel more connected and confident around camp.

Best part, they work even when there is no cell service or Wi-Fi.

We got a Midland set that claims to work for up to 30 miles. We haven't tested that but they certainly work around big, busy campgrounds.

Big adventures start with small responsibilities. πŸ’›

Giving kids consistent jobs around camp helps build confidence, responsibility, and teamwork. Ours never forgets to check the trailer taillights before we hit the road.
