Compete Different

Since just a few days into summer, the football team has been hard at work preparing for the upcoming season. These Knights battle hard Monday through Thursday each week, pursuing a standard set by the coaching staff: choosing “to think with God’s character and act with God’s holiness,” as Coach CJ put it.

What does that look like in practice? It means choosing discipline, maintaining focus, growing in knowledge, and executing well under pressure. The team is not perfect, but every day presents a new opportunity to take another step toward that standard.

These Knights compete relentlessly against one another, giving maximum effort in every rep and every drill. But growth extends beyond the field. Watching film, lifting weights, and learning the playbook provide additional opportunities for players to develop throughout the summer.

Competing different is more than how they perform on the field. It’s about developing Christ-like character that is reflected on the field, in the classroom, and on the path God has for them.

TAKING ADVANTAGE OF OPPORTUNITY. THINK DIFFERENT.

Last week, our rising 6th-8th graders took part in summer basketball camp, where they sharpened fundamental skills, learned teamwork, and discovered how to use their God-given talents to bring glory to the Lord.

One of the most valuable lessons they learned was how to take advantage of every opportunity. As camp concluded each day with games, players had the chance to put their skills into action. With teammates occasionally absent, new challenges emerged.

Rather than becoming discouraged, these Knights chose to think differently. Instead of focusing on who was missing, they embraced opportunities to step into larger roles, gain experience, and rise above expectations. Every challenge became a chance to grow.

As Coach Kevin Pittman shared, “Every day we are presented with opportunities. How we use those opportunities is largely shaped by our thinking and the way we react.”

At Chicago Christian Schools, our goal is for players to come away with immeasurably more than improved skills and ability at these camps, helping them take advantage of opportunities to strive to excel for God’s glory.
