Pictured here is a whole person. A month ago, I culminated into a jaded, disgruntled second-year resident annoyed at systems larger than me and completely . Starting Developing Doc before residency, it never occurred to me what a full-time job residency would be. Call me silly, but no one truly imagines one singular thing can consume all one's time and energy - not me, a person who was doing everything to combat burnout.
For those who don’t know me, I live, breathe and practice daily self-growth and -discovery. I attend therapy twice a week with a psychoanalyst, spend many of my conversations with loved ones and in my head teasing out what happened and how I can grow. I’ve made many mistakes in the past few years, lost friendships, and even made tough decisions to stop caring about things I once cared about too much.
My issue turned out to be I never stopped or learned how to give myself a proper break. So, I broke! The symptoms were classic, and I longed to be somewhere else, and part of me wanted to quit more and be careless.

This past few weeks, I have been saying NO to a lot.
❌ I said NO to drafting a manuscript and being granted first author from a presentation that was already finished and transcribed.
❌ I said NO to writing a manuscript that would outline a curriculum that was already basically written.
❌ I said NO to presenting in front of my department.
❌ I said NO to taking shifts from co-residents that didn't work for me and interfered with previous commitments even though I wanted to help.
Often times in the field of medicine, we only know how to say:
😕 YES.
😕 WELL, I THINK I COULD HELP.
😕 I COULD TAKE A LOOK AT IT.
Saying no isn't easy, but it's about respecting your boundaries. 🤜
When we overstretch ourselves and say no to project we don't have the bandwidth for or don't particularly want to do, the whole situation becomes a drag. 🤯
Then you are taken away from the projects you DO care about and the commitments you have already made.
I challenge you all to say NO ❌ the next time you feel like saying YES ✔️ just because you should....
Comment below ⬇️ with a recent time you said NO or said YES and wish you didn't.

Raise your hand 🖐 if you are a who thinks about the future way too much...
AND double raise your hand, if you have no idea what it's going to hold so thinking about it brings you unwanted anxiety?
We can all relate to this feeling -- I know I can.
You are in medical school, training to become a doctor, and living out what was your dream.
Think back to when you received your acceptance into medical school.
Hone in on that JOY 🎊 and let THAT be where you are today.

If you are a medical student and you have questions about literally ANYTHING and you have goals that you want to reach, it only makes SENSE to work with me!
You heard it from herself.
Dm me ‘🤦🏾♀️’ if you wanna know how you can get my guidance for less than a breakfast at Starbucks every month!

I hear it all the time.
"Do medical students have hobbies?"
As if, doctors-in-training are not real people with real lives.
However, the sad fact is many people do not know how to juggle their hobbies and academic work.
Because becoming a doctor is a top priority and requires a large time and money investment, hobbies sometimes take the backseat.
And when they do, we feel less like ourselves - empty.

"I should just push through this. I will rest later."
How many times do we tell ourselves this exact phrase?
Perhaps it's how we plan to get through Step 1 studying or our first anatomy exam.
Other times, we use it for an entire year -- ""the third year is going to be hard, but you just gotta get through it.""
Do you know what I think? This is a terrible way to think.
