CLEAR Public Lecture Series: Wednesday, October 30, 2019 at 6:00 PM
CLEAR will be holding our annual public lecture, titled "Racial Healing in Q***r and Trans Communities: Challenging Privilege, Confronting System
ic Racism, and Engaging in Collective Healing" presented by Anneliese Singh, Ph.D., LPC, an award-winning social justice scholar and community organizer. In this presentation, Dr. Singh describes ten core strategies of racial healing that q***r and trans people can engage in to build toward collective liberation and racial justice. Participants will have the opportunity to explore their own racial healing to work more effectively with q***r and trans clients and communities across multiple races/ethnicities and more effectively challenge structural racism within institutional settings. Attendees will receive hand-outs related to exploring racial privilege, confronting systemic racism, and engaging in collective healing. Click here to find more information and register for the event. LGBTQ+ Sampling Methodology Think Tank
On June 27, 2019 CLEAR in collaboration with Project RISE of the University of California, Santa Barbara, hosted the LGBTQ+ Sampling Methodology Think Tank. This exciting project brought together LGBTQ+ researchers from around the nation in order to discuss sampling methodology in the 21st century. During this event, we discussed challenges, barriers, and innovative solutions to the challenges of recruiting diverse LGBTQ+ participants in our current social and technological environment. We also held a public discussion hour to disseminate this information and answer questions from other students and community members interested in this topic. If you are interested in listening to a recording of the discussion hour, please click here and you can find the presentation slides here. Moving forward, we will continue to disseminate this information, collaborate on publications and conference presentations, and hold future Think Tank events in order to continue to advance the field of LGBTQ+ research and, ultimately, to better serve our community. Thank you to everyone who made this event possible, including the community members who participated in our public discussion hour and Palo Alto University President, Maureen O' Connor, Ph.D., J.D., who hosted the Think Tank faculty and students for a reception after the event. We are thrilled to announce that we have hired Dr. Jared Boot-Haury (he/him) as the next Goldblum-Carr Postdoctoral Fellow for the 2024-2026 academic years!
Dr. Jared Boot-Haury graduated with his PsyD in clinical psychology from the Michigan School of Psychology and a graduate certificate in LGBT Health Policy and Practice from George Washington University. Jared’s clinical postdoctoral fellowship was focused on LGBTQ+ health at the San Francisco VA Health Care System. He serves as the Policy and Government Affairs Committee Chair of GLMA: Health Professionals Advancing LGBTQ+ Equality, where he focuses on translating research into practice through policies and positions that encourage more affirming healthcare practices for health professionals who work with LGBTQ+ people. Jared’s research to date has focused on improving mental health care experiences for LGBTQ+ communities and exploring minority stressors within LGBTQ+ populations with an emphasis on asexual individuals. Through a project funded by the Blue Cross Blue Shield Foundation of Michigan in collaboration with the Michigan Psychological Association and the NASW-MI, he examined the effect of group assignment to an intensive transgender-specific training group on transgender cultural competency training among mental health professionals.
Jared’s research has also focused on the impact of minority stressors and resilience on mental health and measuring stigmatizing experiences among asexual communities. His dissertation, recognized by the APA Division 44 Transgender Research Award, investigated the impact of minority stressors and resilience factors on psychological distress among individuals holding intersecting transgender/gender diverse and asexual identities. Jared utilizes various quantitative and qualitative methods, including thematic analysis, regression analysis, analysis of variance, and psychometric analysis.
At PAU and Center for LGBTQ Evidence-based Applied Research (CLEAR), Jared will be focused on developing his research program, collaborating on existing projects, mentoring students and building community partnerships. We couldn't be more thrilled to welcome Jared to our team!

I am pleased to share this podcast with CLEAR. With the help of a talented interviewer--Melissa Santos--I was able to describe my journey to becoming a cross cultural psychologist, and my coming to terms with being gay. My journey began in Port Arthur, Texas and spanned the history of the post Stonewall era, including an immersion into the LGBTQ/Q***r community of San Francisco. I hope this history will be beneficial to you in your journeys.

Researchers at Palo Alto University, in collaboration with Gallaudet University, are recruiting participants for a research study looking at the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on people who identify as both LGBTQ+ and as a person with a disability. This study aims to gather information on how COVID-19 has impacted people in this intersectional community, with a focus on social support and access to healthcare. If you agree to participate in this IRB-approved study, you will first fill out a brief online survey, which should take around 10-12 minutes to complete, after which time you will have the option to participate in an interview via Zoom with the research investigators for a small stipend.
If you have any questions about this study, or if you need accommodations in order to complete the survey or online interview, please reach out to Dr. Kathryn Wagner at [email protected]
