Today is Women’s Equality Day, commemorating the 1920 certification of the 19th Amendment, granting American women the constitutional right to vote. This was a momentous step toward fulfilling the democratic ideals that our country was founded upon. Maybe you’ve heard more about the lives of the Suffragette Movement’s leaders from the Tony-Award-winning musical Suffs, which explores the power of collective action and emphasizes the importance of continuing to fight for equality.
But did you know three Castilleja alums, sisters Julie Cohn ’05 and Marion Cohn ’08 and Morgan Jones '09 were producers of the show? Julie says, “We were drawn to the project by the strong female friendships it's rooted in and the critical political struggle it gives voice to. It felt cathartic, even as it portrayed the frustrations and challenges women have faced for centuries in their battle for rights.” When thinking about the messages Castilleja students can take away from the musical, Marion says, "Relevance, relevance, relevance. Always with historical stories, the question comes down to how much has changed and how you feel about that as you look toward the future.”
Castilleja students just began a new school year, and together with their teachers and peers, they will continue to learn from the past to keep making our democracy stronger.
