Goal setting with kids can easily feel like extra homework if we aren't careful. We just put together a few free themed planner sheets on the blog, but my favorite part is the simple framework it uses. Instead of a long resolution list, it suggests picking just three things: something physical, something they genuinely want to learn, and something kind to do for others. You can print the pages or open them in Google Slides if your child prefers typing things out. Do your kids usually like setting goals for the new year, or do you keep things pretty low-key?

Trying to figure out where coding might fit for your child?

This guide compares online and in-person options around Toronto, with a helpful range by age and interest: Scratch for beginners, Junior Robotics or Minecraft Redstone for kids who like building, and Python or AI for older students. One practical thing to watch at home: does your child spend more time making stories, solving puzzles, or building systems? That may point you toward the kind of class they’ll enjoy most. The free Scratch classes mentioned in the article could also be a low-pressure way to see whether coding clicks before choosing a longer program. Which Toronto option have your family tried—or are you still researching?

Need an easy summer STEM activity with almost no setup?

This roundup includes 10 ideas, but the water-cycle bag and shadow drawing are especially simple for a sunny afternoon at home. Fill a sealable bag with water and a little blue food coloring, tape it to a window, and check over the next few days for evaporation, condensation, and “rain.” You can also place a toy on paper and trace its shadow at different times to see how its length and position change. Which one would your kids be more likely to try?

Explore a treasure trove of STEM summer activities tailored for children, ranging from growing dazzling rock candy to learning coding online camps.

AI can start with a Scratch project.

Our new guide shows how students can use Scratch’s Text to Speech and Translation extensions to make projects talk, and Face Sensing to create games that respond to movement, like head tilts or facial expressions. For a deeper introduction, Machine Learning for Kids lets them train a simple model with examples and use it in projects such as a virtual pet that recognizes an apple, cup, or hand gesture. A useful thing to try at home: ask your child what examples their model would need—and what might happen if those examples were too limited. Which would your child want to build first: a face-sensing game or an AI-powered virtual pet?

Scratch + AI is perfect for kids. Make smart AI Scratch games & projects with Face Sensing, Speech and more. Learn AI with Scratch. Grades 4-9.
