Learn AI with Scratch AI Extensions, Fun Projects, Tools for Kids 05/17/2026

It turns out kids can actually build their own AI projects right inside Scratch. I was just looking through our new guide, and it's pretty neat that they can now use the Face Sensing blocks to make games that react to their actual head tilts or facial expressions on camera. They can even use platforms like Machine Learning for Kids to train a virtual pet to "eat" when they hold a real apple up to the we**am. If your child is already tinkering with coding, have them look for the Face Sensing extension in their next project to see what kind of interactive filters they can invent at home. For those who want a bit of guidance figuring these concepts out, our free AI Explorers class is a nice, low-pressure way to start. 🤖

How to Use Scratch - The Ultimate Guide to Learn Scratch 05/15/2026

If your kids are constantly asking to make their own video games, Scratch is the best place for them to start. We just put out a new guide that walks through the absolute basics, like how to set up a workspace and what all those color-coded coding blocks actually mean. If they are already messing around in the editor at home, check to see if they are using the yellow Event blocks at the very top of their screen, because the game won't run without one. The post also covers how to fix common glitches, like characters walking upside down or passing straight through walls. If they want some real-time help putting their first game together, they are always welcome to join our free Scratch intro session or jump into a Scratch Ninja class.

What Is Arduino? Uses of Arduino: Ultimate Guide for Parents 05/14/2026

If your kids are used to coding on a screen, getting them to build something in the physical world is a fun next step. I was just looking through our instructor Jared's new guide on Arduino, and it does a really good job breaking down what these little boards actually do. Basically, they let kids write code to control real objects like motors, alarms, and sensors. It's a great way to help them understand how the everyday electronics around your house actually work behind the scenes. If your child wants to try it out without you having to buy any hardware first, our Circuit Wizards Arduino for Kids class uses an online simulator to test their ideas. Has anyone's kid tried tinkering with an Arduino at home yet?

What Is Arduino? Uses of Arduino: Ultimate Guide for Parents Before we get to the “what,” as an instructor, I think it’s important to discuss the “why” for you and your children.

If you have a teen interested in STEM, the 2026 competition season is already sneaking up on us. I just read through our updated guide on the top 20 high school science competitions, and it was interesting to see how many categories like biology and environmental science now rely heavily on coding to analyze data. Beyond just aiming for awards, these events are a really practical way for kids to test out potential college majors and learn how to collaborate on a team. If your child is thinking about entering, our biggest piece of advice is to start building the necessary skills three to six months before the project is actually due. For those eyeing something like the Congressional App Challenge, our Intro to Building Mobile Apps class using Thunkable is a great place to start.
