As a community of learners, we strive to reflect the diversity and strength of our students, families, staff and the broader community through our programs, policies, and practices. We have made mistakes and we most certainly will make more in the future. However, we will never waiver in our belief that there is a light in every single individual, that we are stewards of the Earth and our communities, and that our diversity is our greatest strength.

Can you recall a time when your child faced a setback, such as a poor grade or a conflict with friends? How did they respond?
Have you noticed moments when your child had to adapt to unexpected changes, like a shift in their routine? What skills did they demonstrate?
Think about a situation where your child had to work through frustration or disappointment. What strategies could they have used to cope more effectively?
If you’ve answered yes to any of those questions, then join us on April 16 for a free Parenting Workshop: Raising Resilient Children. Learn the key ingredients to raising children who can bounce back from challenges and develop relationships that will help them maintain a healthy and supportive school-life balance.
We are excited to partner with our friends to offer this free, in-person workshop on April 16 from 6-7:30PM.

Join us on March 14, Pi Day, for a free screening of the award-winning film Counted Out.
The film highlights how maths is behind so much of what happens in our world, from who gets jobs to who wins elections. The film also illustrates how everyone can access maths if we are willing to explore different paths.
Our panel conversation will be moderated by author Julie Lythcott-Haims and will include PAUSD Assistant Superintendent Lana Conway, and our head of school, Chris Bezsylko.
If you’ve ever doubted the importance of math, this film might change your mind! Registration link in our bio.

“Math is all around us.”
“Numeric literacy is a critical determinant of our social and economic power.”
“Mathematical fluency and thinking requires us to move beyond our current rigid focus on computational skill.”
“Our inability to speak the language of math has a direct impact on the quality of our lives and the future of our society.”
These are just a few of the themes that emerged from our Jan 31 screening of the new documentary . The film highlights how math is behind so much of what happens in our world, from who gets jobs to who wins elections.
A BIG THANK YOU to author Julie Lythcott-Haims for moderating our panel discussion with Jo Boaler, author and mathematician; Julie Inasingh, curriculum specialist; Tamar Posner, founder of MathAction; and our very own head of school, Chris Bezsylko.
Curious to learn more… Join us on March 14 for a free screening followed by a panel discussion. This is a must-see for anyone curious to learn about how math is foundational to democracy and economic opportunity. If you’ve ever doubted the importance of math, this film might change your mind! Authentic learning experiences are at the core of our program. More often than not, discrete academic skills can be directly incorporated into these authentic experiences. However, sometimes the key learning targets are open-ended skills and habits that transfer across academic disciplines such as perseverance, communication, problem solving, critical thinking, planning, and more.
Two of our students are preparing to teach their peers all about speedcubing. Active speedcubers themselves, they’ve prepared a unit that will introduce peers to the history of speedcubing, highlight many of its benefits, share some interesting facts, and ultimately teach their peers how to solve a speedcube. Along the way, they will make connections to mathematics and science practices. After this unit, the two hope to host a speedcubing competition here at ILS.
Today these students had a video call with Max Murphy from Max has been cubing for over a decade and co-manages the product and partnership opportunities out of their Canada office. Connecting with mentors in the real-world is a great motivator and offers many lessons that last over time.
A BIG THANK YOU to Max and speedcubeshop for taking the time to speak to our ILS speedcubers!

A BIG ILS shoutout to Kay from for joining us today. Kay helped us have a deeper understanding of the 4Rs and how we can each take small actions to minimize waste and help create more sustainable future.
REDUCE: How can you limit your purchases of single-use products? One example our learners shared was to buy things like yogurt in bigger containers rather than purchasing individual serving containers.
REUSE: How can you reuse items? Our learners had several examples including donating gently used items, sewing / patching clothes, creating arts and crafts, and even re-purposing like turning a milk carton into a bird feeder.
RECYCLE: How can you recycle items so that they actually get recycled? While there are many ways to reduce waste (choose cardboard packaging over plastic), much of what we recycle doesn't actually get recycled. Know what is recycled in your community. Perhaps collect cans/bottles at home and take your child to a recycling center where they will get some $$ in return for their efforts.
ROT: Did you know that organic waste is a major contributor to methane in the atmosphere? Most of the scraps and soiled paper products used at home can be composted through home waste services. Larger companies, and some neighborhoods, can compost all organic matter including bones and more.

Today marks the 61st anniversary of the “March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom”.
Most will not recall that event, but this is where Dr Martin Luther King Jr gave his famous “I Have A Dream” speech. While this has gained the most attention in our society, Dr King has a vast record of deeply powerful and engaging speeches and writings, each of which deserves a read. Dr King was not a perfect man, but he was a person committed to equity, social justice, and sustainability… values that we hold dear here at ILS.
Furthermore, he was a strong advocate for others and he sought to take action in a meaningful way… a path of peace amidst a swirl of violence.
From indigenous people to immigrants to refugees of war and climate change, there is much work to be done. We are grateful to all who are able to stand up, exercise their voice, and take meaningful action in support of equity, social justice, and sustainability.
