What an amazing way to kickoff the weekend. is proud to unveil our chalk mural for the titled “Raised Voices” that celebrates culture, freedom, inclusion, and unity, and acknowledges Bay Area activists.
Raised clenched fists symbolize the movement started in Oakland by Huey P. Newton and Bobby Seale, and supported by Richard Aoki.
The middle hand is holding a voting ballot that is symbolic of Oakland resident Clara Elizabeth Chan Lee, the first Chinese-American woman to register to vote in the United States and activist.
The cup of coffee and images of poetry coming to life from the page represents Pat Parker who was a poet who read about inequalities such as racism and sexism throughout Berkeley.
Glimpses of Mt. Hamilton and San Jose mountains pay homage to Cesar Chavez, a labor leader and civil rights activist who founded the National Farm Workers Association (later the United Farm Workers of America).
The bountiful colors represent the perpetual creativity and support that flows from the weapons of visual expression - the paint brush and pencil. We hope our mural inspires you to raise your illustrative voice.
