Some people find the Gurdjieff Work after exploring other approaches to spirituality, psychology, meditation, or self-developement. The work doesn't ask you to adopt a set of beliefs. It begins with observation: of ourselves, our reactions, and how we are in life. This is the ground from which real change becomes possible.
We are expanding a small Rochester-area group for people interested in exploring these questions together. We meet on Tuesday evenings, mostly on line, with opportunities to meet in person. If this speaks to something you've been looking for, send us a message. We'd be glad to talk. RochesterGurdjieffCenter.org

“We have to decide how we are to see man: as an egg or as a bird. And if we see him as an egg we must not ascribe to him properties of a bird. When we see him as an egg the whole psychology becomes different: all human life becomes the life of embryos, of incomplete beings. And for some the meaning of life becomes the possibility of passing to another state.”
P.D. Ouspensky

Henri Tracol (1909–1997). "I try to make myself available in such away that I can be conscious of the forces that pass through me, in order to understand their direction and orientation, and adapt myself better to them; to try to become a good instrument, and a conscious one."
Henri Tracol, Birth of a Sculpture
A native of France, and a journalist, photographer, and sculptor, Henri Tracol met Gurdjieff in 1938 and worked with him closely for 10 years. He became a leading proponent of the Gurdjieff teaching, and President of the Gurdjieff Institute in France.

Annie Lou Staveley 1906-1996
“The greatest thing I have learned in my life—and not just once, but many times—is the importance of work on oneself. In fact, it is the only important thing in anyone’s life. Everything else vanishes, almost without a trace, sooner or later. Only work on oneself leaves results which can be returned to, which do not change. Only work on myself is truly work for myself and can become work for all.”

Annie Lou Staveley was a member of Jane Heap’s group in London before and during the Second World War. She made frequent visits to Paris with the group to study with Gurdjieff between 1946 and1949. She later returned to the United States where she maintained a relationship with Mme Jeanne de Salzmann. She began meeting with former students of Jane Heap, reading Gurdjieff’s works together, in Portland Oregon. Many students gathered around her, and this eventually led to the purchase of a property in Aurora, Oregon that was named Two Rivers Farm, and became a thriving center for the Gurdjieff
work under her guidance. The farm continues to be a productive center for the work to this day.

As Gurdjieff gathered students interested in his teaching, he found those with an aim beyond the exterior.
"Here there are neither Russians nor English, Jews nor Christians, but only those who pursue one aim—to be able to be."
G.I. Gurdjieff

Another Quote from Gurdjieff that shows direction and aim for his teaching, as he gathered students during difficult times.
“In order to awaken a conscience capable of participating in every action, a personal aim and correct methods are necessary, It is for this awakening and realization, necessary for mankind, that schools exist."
