Blue Ridge Virginia Governor's School

Blue Ridge Virginia Governor's School A program for academically motivated, high-ability high school students from Central Virginia.

The Blue Ridge Virtual Governor’s School is a unique entity in the Commonwealth of Virginia, in that we are one of the only Governor’s Schools to exist as a “virtual” school. Rather than bringing our students together each day to a common location, we bring students together through a shared curriculum, interactive technology, frequent collaboration and shared experiences. It is through these unco

nventional learning activities that our students prepare themselves for success in the world beyond high school. The Blue Ridge Virtual Governor's School (BRVGS) is an academic year governor's school that provides a challenging and differentiated program of studies in core academic subjects, emphasizing mathematics, science, and technology. The program utilizes interactive technology, field trips, student collaboration and team teaching to create a regional community of learners from the counties of Fluvanna, Goochland, Greene, Louisa, Madison, Nelson, and Orange. The aim of the program is to provide students with instruction in those skills necessary for success beyond high school, and to give individual students with both responsibility and freedom in their learning endeavors.

Storyteller in the Making! 🎨📖

Lee Tate, rising BRVGS Senior, brought her imagination to life this summer in the Intro to Comics and Graphic Novels program at VCUarts!

From professional character design to immersive environment art, Lee crafted an incredible 13-page comic prelude—weaving together an epic fantasy world with a message on environmental protection. 🌿⚔️

Here is what Lee shared about her experience:

"I truly loved my time at VCUarts. It allowed me to visualize a future as an art major and gave me the confidence to create something new. My teacher, Kelly Adler, and TA, Isabella, were a great help... They shared their personal experience as artists and gave me great advice and constructive criticism while I wrote my story and drew my panels."

Huge shoutout to the amazing mentors at VCUarts for guiding our talented students, and congratulations to Lee on turning a blank canvas into pure inspiration! We can't wait to read the full graphic novel one day. 📚✨

BRVGS rising Junior, Iris Kang, spent part of her summer at the VCU MLS Path: Transfusion Services Summer Scholars learning about medical lab science. Here is what she had to say:
The week’s focus was on transfusion medicine and blood banking. Everyday, we would start with a lecture and end with a corresponding lab. I was able to test my blood type, manually perform antibody screenings, cross matchings, and even flow cytometry. Gradually, we learned about each step medical lab scientists take to find the perfect blood donor for their patients. I gained an immense amount of knowledge surrounding the immune system, the components of blood, the various paths of medicine, and the problem solving tactics in the lab. I loved the hands-on experience that was tied with our lessons; it made comprehension that much easier. Not only that, I was able to meet so many amazing students from Virginia, Colorado, and even California. We were able to connect and make bonds that wouldn’t have been possible outside of this program. All in all, the experience was something I will remember for a lifetime. It gave me a chance to explore my interests and future career path.

Summer is almost here! ☀️

As you start to wrap up the school year and head into break, don't forget to grab your BRVGS Summer Work materials. We want every student to feel prepared and confident when we head back in the fall, so now is the perfect time to make sure you have everything you need before the hallways clear out.

Rising 9th graders, you’ll be diving into "Technology Through the Ages" for your World History course. Your summer work packet is available online now and is due on your very first day back. If you’d prefer a physical copy to be mailed to you, please reach out to [email protected] before you head off for vacation! 📚

Rising 10th graders, you have an exciting summer of reading ahead with Under a White Sky by Elizabeth Kolbert. Make sure you have your copy of the book and the accompanying AP Environmental Science summer packet before school ends. If you haven't received your book yet, check in with your AP ES teacher or the BRVGS team ASAP. Both your reading and your packet will be due on the first day of school. 🌍

Rising seniors, summer is a critical window for your Senior Capstone Project. Use this time to dive into your Professional Learning Experience (PLE) hours. Staying on top of your documentation now will make your fall semester much smoother! 🎓

You can find all the packets, infromation, and teacher contacts at the link below. We hope you have an incredible, relaxing summer, but a little bit of prep now goes a long way. See you in the fall! 🚀

Welcome to the BRVGS Class of 2030! 🎒

We are so excited to invite all incoming freshmen to one of our summer Orientation sessions. This is your chance to meet your new classmates and teachers from across the region, get a head start on your BRVGS skills, and dive into your World History course. While attendance isn't required, it’s a great way to kick off the year and get comfortable with the program.

We have two sessions scheduled from 9:00 AM to 12:30 PM at the Best Western in Zion Crossroads.

We recommend that students from Goochland, Greene, Louisa, and Madison attend on Thursday, July 9th
We recommend that students from Fluvanna, Nelson, and Orange join us on Monday, July 13th.

Since both days feature the exact same content, you only need to attend one session. If you can’t make your county's recommended date, feel free to join the other (just keep in mind that bus transportation is only provided on the recommended day for your district).
