Summer Residential Governor's Schools for Current 10th & 11th Grade Students

Students, please see your School Counselor to learn more and express your interest by Monday, October 27!

Summer Residential Governor’s Schools provide high school sophomores and juniors (rising 11th and 12th graders) with intensive educational experiences in visual and performing arts; humanities; medicine and health sciences; mathematics, science, and technology; or through mentorships in marine science, or engineering.

Each Summer Residential Governor’s School focuses on one special area of interest. Students live on a college or university campus for up to four weeks each summer. During this time, students are involved in classroom and laboratory work, field studies, research, individual and group projects and performances, and seminars with noted scholars, visiting artists, and other professionals. In the three mentorships, students are selected to work side-by-side with research scientists, physicians, and a variety of other professionals. A director and a student-life staff provide supervision of students 24 hours a day, throughout the program.

October is National Bullying Prevention Month.

Bullying is persistent or ongoing threatening and aggressive physical behavior or verbal abuse directed toward other people, especially those who are younger, smaller, weaker, or in some other situation of relative disadvantage. Cyberbullying is verbally threatening or harassing behavior conducted through such electronic technology as cell phones, e-mail, and text messaging. (American Psychological Association)

Being an Upstander means taking simple, doable steps to support someone if they are being bullied. We all can take these steps if we see someone being bullied:

-Don't laugh
-Don't encourage the bully in any way
-Don't participate
-Stay at a safe distance and help the target get away
-Don’t become an "audience" for the bully
-Reach out in friendship
-Help the victim in any way you can
-Support the victim in private
-If you notice someone being isolated from others, invite them to join you
-Include the victim in some of your activities
-Tell an adult
-There is strength in numbers. Every school and every community has more caring kids than bullies.

Becoming an Upstander looks like this:

-Taking action by telling the bully to stop
-Taking action by getting others to stand up to the bully with them
-Taking action by helping the victim.
-Taking action by shifting the focus and redirecting the bully away from the victim
-Taking action by telling an adult who can help
