Palmetto High School and the School District of Manatee County are deeply saddened by the passing of Bryan Wilkes, a respected educator, coach, athletic director, veteran, and mentor whose impact on generations of student-athletes will be felt for years to come.
For more than two decades at Palmetto High School, Coach Wilkes dedicated his life to helping students succeed both in competition and in life, earning the admiration of colleagues, families, and the community he proudly called home.
A Florida native and graduate of Southeast High School, Coach Wilkes built a distinguished career marked by service, leadership, and excellence. From his accomplishments as a wrestler and member of the U.S. Marine Corps All-Marine Wrestling Team to his years guiding wrestling programs and athletic departments across Manatee County, he exemplified discipline, perseverance, and an unwavering commitment to others. His leadership helped shape countless students, not only as athletes but as confident and responsible individuals.
After founding the wrestling program at Palmetto High School in 2005 and leading the Tigers to numerous successes, Coach Wilkes continued his service to students as Athletic Director, a role he proudly held since 2020. Throughout his career, he was known for his integrity, strong work ethic, and genuine care for those around him.
“Bryan dedicated his life to serving students and supporting athletics in Manatee County,” said Principal Monica S. DeLesline. “Whether as a coach, athletic director, veteran, or mentor, he made a lasting difference in the lives of so many. His legacy will live on through the students, athletes, coaches, and colleagues he inspired. We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family and all who loved him.”
Our entire community mourns this tremendous loss. We are grateful for Coach Wilkes’ years of service, leadership, and friendship, and we will honor his memory by continuing the work he cared about most: supporting and inspiring students.
