Winhold Montessori Preschool has served the Palmetto Bay community since 1982, starting with just ten children and a single assistant. By 1985, the school expanded to three classrooms, and in 1990, consolidated its growing student body in one location on Old Cutler Road. Due to continued growth, Winhold moved to its current facility in 2002, now offering five spacious classrooms in a purpose-built Montessori environment. Today, we proudly continue this legacy with a bilingual, authentic Montessori education for children ages 12 months to 6 years, enriched with art, music, mindfulness, and soccer. Our programs are designed to foster confidence, independence, and a love of learning in a safe, loving atmosphere. We are members of the International Montessori Council (IMC), registered with the Early Learning Coalition of Miami-Dade/Monroe, and participate in both VPK and School Readiness programs. At Winhold Montessori, our classrooms are carefully prepared to connect each child to their environment through purposeful, well-designed lessons that encourage exploration and creativity.

Last week, our classroom got a little more interesting. 🐾

At Winhold, we believe that caring for animals teaches children something no lesson plan can fully capture: empathy, gentleness, and the responsibility that comes from looking after a living thing that depends on you.

Pets are family. And family deserves to be celebrated.

A huge thank you to every Winhold family who brought their beloved pets today, for trusting us with them, for sharing them with our children, and for making this one of those days nobody will forget.

A pilot who flies planes. A firefighter who runs toward the fire. A dentist who makes sure your smile stays healthy. A doctor who shows up when you need her most.

At Winhold, we brought them all into our classroom and let our children do what they do best: ask questions, touch everything, and wonder out loud.

When a firefighter, doctor, or police officer steps into our prepared environment, our children don’t just see a unifor, they observe purpose, care, and real-world contribution. At age 4, learning about community helpers isn’t about choosing a lifelong career; it’s about discovering how people work together to keep us safe and supported.

In our Montessori community, these real-life moments cultivate independence, deep respect for society, and a calm confidence in the world around them. This Labor Day, we honor all the hardworking families in Palmetto Bay who build our community every single day.

To anyone watching this and thinking “they’re just playing with animal sounds” —

Look again.

In this one activity, she is:

🧠 Listening — filtering one sound from everything else in the room

🔍 Processing — matching what she heard to what she sees

✅ Deciding — choosing the right animal with confidence

🚶 Self-regulating — walking calmly to her seat when she’s done

No worksheet. No grade. No pressure.

Just a child building the concentration, autonomy, and confidence she’ll carry into every classroom, and every challenge, for the rest of her life.

Most parents walk into a preschool tour and look at the same things.

The colors. The decorations. How organized the shelves are. Whether the classroom looks like the ones they’ve seen on Pinterest.

And those things aren’t wrong to notice.

But Montessori teachers look at something else entirely.

They look at the children.

Specifically: are they choosing their own work? Are they focused without being told to focus? Do they move through the space with purpose? Do they help each other without being asked?

A beautifully decorated classroom with distracted children tells you very little.

There are two types of motor development, and both matter.

Fine motor is the small stuff: holding a pencil, buttoning a shirt, using scissors. But there’s also Gross Motor Development, and that’s exactly what you’re seeing here.

Gross motor skills are the big movements: jumping, crawling, balancing, climbing. And they’re not just about being active. They’re the foundation for everything a child does in daily life.
