Meet the Director of the MSOEE program, who is also one of the professors!
Steve Rubinstein received his M.S. in Experiential Education from Minnesota State University, a B.S. in Psychology from Guildford College and a Certificate of Outdoor Leadership from Seljord Folk Collage.
Steve has extensive experience in the field teaching and directing programs since 1987, including his work as Faculty and Program Director in Outdoor Education at MT Hood Community College in Oregon, Program Director at Northwest Earth Institute and Education Coordinator & Asst. Director at Northwest Service Academy.
He really likes teaching the Power of Place class and the Research class. Both of them are about the way that we see the world and how relationships play a role in how we understand it.

Congratulations to Heather for her thesis defense!
Today, Heather shared with us how culturally-focused training can help guides tell accurate, respectful stories, empower Indigenous voices, and transform tourism narratives.
Great presentation that got us thinking about what narratives do we share as educators too.

Meet our MSOEE alumni Alex Wilson!
“I graduated from the MSOEE program in 2013, and it continues to be an integral part of my life! The skills I learned and knowledge I gained in collaboration with my cohort have allowed me to pursue jobs in agricultural education, community organizing, and curriculum design. The emphasis on thorough and well-informed research methods have proved very useful in applying for and implementing grants. I currently work for APU as the Youth Agriculture Education Coordinator as well as adjunct faculty for the MSOEE program. Both of these positions help connect me with folks of all ages to promote environmentally responsible behaviors, healthy lifestyles, and a wonderfully grounding and motivating sense of place. Thank you MSOEE for the foundational skills to help me live my best life!!”

Louise Kellogg’s vision lives on through the Kellogg Campus, a hub for sustainable living and innovative education exemplified by the Masters of Science Outdoor and Environmental Education (MSOEE) program. Emphasizing resilient food systems and renewable design, the campus reflects her belief that true education integrates nature with learning. As Louise herself stated, “Without the serenity of the fields and woods, animals and friendly birds in their natural setting, a private educational institution can only offer book learning, not a real education.”
