Long before sergers came roaring onto the scene, seamstresses and tailors were out here doing things the old-fashioned way—carefully overcasting seam edges by hand to keep fraying in check. No machines, no shortcuts, just skill (and probably a lot of patience). Plot twist: couture houses still use this technique today, because some methods are simply too good to retire. Curious how it’s done? That’s exactly why we teach it at UniversityofFashion.com. Subscribe and learn fashion design from the pros—no time machine required.

Every great design begins with the pose. At UniversityofFashion.com, we start with the fundamentals—mapping the fashion figure using the 9-head proportion. This classic front-facing pose is the foundation taught in fashion programs everywhere. Master it as your template, and you’ll be ready to explore a full range of dynamic fashion poses.
Working with leather and suede requires specific techniques when it comes to garment construction. This lesson will teach you about the types of machines, needles, stitch lengths and other materials that are used for seams, hems, pockets, buttons and buttonholes. This lesson will help you navigate the ins and outs of working with animal skins.
Let us teach you the art of couture fabric manipulation using an embroidery hoop and our downloadable swirl motif pattern. You will be inspired to apply this knowledge to your designs, such as a detail on collars, sleeves, pockets, as trim or even as an entire garment!
