Coachella Valley Starts Early—and the Results Are Showing
How are Coachella Valley students achieving stronger academic results?
They start early.

It would be difficult to find many school districts willing to provide Gradual Release professional development and ongoing instructional coaching to more than 40 Head Start, Preschool, and Pre-K teachers. But Coachella Valley understands something powerful: if we want students to excel later, we must build the foundation earlier.

These talented early-learning leaders and teachers embrace the power of play-based learning—where purposeful play, imagination, exploration, and adult guidance develop critical cognitive, language, social, and motor skills.

But they also understand an important distinction:
Play-based learning and explicit instruction are not competing philosophies. They can—and should—work together.

Even our youngest learners benefit when teachers intentionally model, guide, practice, check for understanding, and gradually release responsibility. Direct Instruction has a place in the early-learning classroom when it is developmentally appropriate, purposeful, and skillfully integrated.

That is what makes this work so exciting. Coachella Valley is not waiting until kindergarten—or third grade—to accelerate learning. They are building confident, capable learners from the very beginning.

This could not be more true.
Educators may believe they are doing the right things, but good intentions do not improve student outcomes—consistent, high-quality implementation does.

When implementation remains unchanged, student results remain unchanged.

The missing ingredients are often high expectations, accountability, fidelity, and the discipline to stay the course.

Congratulations to Coachella Valley Unified School District on earning state recognition for improved student results! Two years ago, my message to your educators was simple, direct, and unwavering:

“WHAT YOU EXPECT IS WHAT YOU GET!”
Raise the expectations.
Demand excellence in implementation.
Hold the course.
And the results will follow.

As reported on the State's CDE Website, on August 13, State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond joined Coachella Valley Unified School District (CVUSD) Superintendent Dr. Frances Esparza and district leadership at the district's Welcome Back to School event.

CVUSD has earned countywide recognition for having the highest FAFSA and California Dream Act completion rates, exceptional foster youth support, year-over-year improvement, and robust college-going systems. Superintendent Thurmond highlighted the district's steady improvement in moving the needle on literacy, making it one of the highest-performing districts in California.

Many ask how I support school districts to accelerate student learning. Significant increases will happen when educators are serious about implementing key actions. The bottom line is that high effect size strategies and programs need to go through a rigorous comprehensive coaching process, and administration MUST hold adults accountable to implement these actions to the highest standard. Providing explicit feedback is a must other wise the power of your intention fades quickly. I want to partner with educators who are willing to roll up their sleeves and do what's right. WHAT you EXPECT is WHAT you GET!

Across generations, agricultural workers have helped build food systems from the ground up — planting, harvesting, and sustaining communities.

Much of this work happens without recognition.

Not in headlines.
Not in the spotlight.
But in the fields.

Their work is physically demanding.
Long hours, changing conditions, and constant effort are part of the job.

And still… they show up.

Not for attention.
Not for praise.
But because the work matters.
