Last month for the 4th year in a row, select 8th graders and educators worked side-by-side with and scientists to learn about and employ two different shark research methods:

1️⃣ baited remote underwater video system (BRUVS) surveys, and
2️⃣ drumline fishing

Our students had the chance to explore marine science firsthand and engage in all aspects of the fieldwork, including the assembly, baiting, deployment, and recovery of the specialized research survey and fishing gear offshore of West Palm Beach.

The team caught two male tiger sharks (Galeocerdo cuvier), one male bull shark (Carcharhinus leucas) and one male Atlantic sharpnose shark (Rhizoprionodon terraenovae)! Students were able to assist the science team in the data collection process, taking body measurements, tissue samples and tagging each shark!

All research was conducted under Florida permits held by scientists.

There is no shortage of love and support at PBDA, but perhaps nowhere were they felt more deeply than at Friday’s Commencement ceremony for the Class of 2026. 🎓💙💛

From heartfelt student reflections that pulled at the “hamstrings” (IYKYK) and celebrations of our dedicated faculty, to a celebration of the lifers whose journeys began as early as Pre-Primary, the afternoon was filled with gratitude, laughter, more than a few tears, and just the right amount of Pitbull.

The special keynote address from math teacher Elizabeth Sellers, inspired by Allen Levi’s “Theo of Golden,” served as a poignant reminder that the strongest communities are built by people who consistently show up for one another.

It was a memorable and bittersweet farewell to the Class of 2026 and a joyful celebration of all they have accomplished. We can’t wait to watch them change the world.
