Dear Families,
Head lice do not have a true "season" and generally do not die off because of Florida weather.
A few things to know:
• Head lice live on human scalps, where the temperature stays warm year-round.
• Because they depend on people rather than outdoor conditions, Florida's heat, humidity, or mild winters do not eliminate them.
• Lice can occur at any time of year.
• Cases often increase when children are in close contact, such as during the school year, summer camps, sports, sleepovers, and after-school programs.
• Lice that fall off a person's head usually die within 1–2 days because they need human blood to survive.
• Nits (lice eggs) need the warmth of the scalp to hatch and generally will not survive long away from a person.
Signs of Head Lice
• Frequent scratching of the head or scalp
• A tickling sensation in the hair
• Difficulty sleeping due to scalp irritation
• Small white or yellowish eggs (nits) attached firmly to hair shafts
• Live lice moving on the scalp or hair
Prevention Tips
• Add styling products to your child’s hair. Mousse, Gel, Hairspray
• Do not share brushes, combs, hats, hair accessories, headphones, or helmets.
• Keep long hair tied back when possible.
• Regularly check your child's hair, especially behind the ears and at the nape of the neck.
If Lice Are Found
• Begin treatment promptly using an approved lice treatment product or follow your healthcare provider's recommendations.
• Remove nits with a fine-tooth lice comb.
• Wash recently worn clothing, bedding, hats, and towels in hot water and dry on high heat.
• Soak combs and brushes in hot water for at least 10 minutes.
By working together and checking children regularly, we can help reduce the spread of head lice within our community.
Thank you for your cooperation and support.
