BSN | LEGACY SPORTS CONSTRUCTION ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: BAYSIDE BEARS’ ZION JONES

Two weeks, two running backs, 625 rushing yards and eight touchdowns.
Football has captured the BSN | Legacy Sports Construction Athlete of the Week award for the second consecutive week, and it has taken a pair of historic performances to accomplish it.
Melbourne Bulldogs sophomore Tyrese Jefferson established the standard when he rushed for 314 yards and four touchdowns in Week 1. Seven days later, Bayside junior Zion Jones answered with a remarkable performance of his own.
Jones rushed for 311 yards and four touchdowns on only 18 carries, leading the Bears to a monumental 42-25 victory over their South Brevard rival, the Palm Bay Pirates.
His performance, the historical significance of Bayside’s victory and an overwhelming response from the community made Jones the clear choice as this week’s BSN | Legacy Sports Construction Athlete of the Week.
This was more than another productive night from one of Brevard County’s most explosive running backs.
It was a rivalry-altering performance.
Bayside and Palm Bay have met every year since 2004, except for 2017, 2018 and 2024. During that stretch, the Bears had defeated the Pirates only once, earning an 18-6 victory in 2020.
Bayside had lost every other meeting by an average of nearly 26 points per game.
That history followed the Bears onto the field Friday night, but it could not keep up with Jones once he found open space.
The junior averaged an astonishing 17.3 yards every time he carried the football. Three of his four touchdowns came on electrifying runs of 60, 57 and 80 yards as he repeatedly turned a crease into a race toward the end zone.
Jones also caught two passes for 25 yards, giving him 336 yards from scrimmage in one of the most dominant individual performances of the young season.
With 311 yards coming on the ground, Jones accounted for more than seven yards for every point Bayside scored in the victory.
His four touchdowns helped the Bears defeat their longtime rival for only the second time in more than two decades and gave Bayside a victory that will be remembered long after the final statistics from this season are recorded.
Jones now leads Brevard County with 516 rushing yards through three weeks while averaging nearly nine yards per carry. He has established himself as the centerpiece of a dangerous Bayside offense and one of the county’s most exciting playmakers.
The community certainly took notice.
Brevard Sports Network received nearly 100 emails supporting this week’s nominees, and approximately three out of every four included Jones’ name.
The numbers on the field made a powerful argument. The response from Bears fans, teammates, classmates and supporters made the decision even more convincing.
As this week’s winner, Jones will receive a $35 Dick’s Sporting Goods gift card courtesy of Legacy Sports Construction and will be recognized across all Brevard Sports Network platforms.

ANOTHER OUTSTANDING GROUP OF NOMINEES
Jones’ unforgettable performance earned him this week’s honor, but he was surrounded on the ballot by student-athletes who produced exceptional performances of their own.
The other nominees represented football, volleyball, cross country and bowling, demonstrating once again that outstanding athletic achievement can be found throughout Brevard County.
VOLLEYBALL
ADDI CASEY — VIERA HAWKS
Casey helped Viera remain undefeated by delivering 29 kills during a pair of straight-set victories.
The junior tied for the team lead with 15 kills against Holy Trinity on Aug. 25 before recording a team-high 14 kills against Astronaut two nights later.
Casey leads the 5-0 Hawks with 49 kills this season and has produced those numbers with an outstanding .330 hitting percentage.
GWEN COTHAM — SPACE COAST VIPERS
Cotham kept the Space Coast offense operating at a tremendous pace as the Vipers completed three consecutive sweeps.
The junior setter accumulated 91 assists and 19 service aces during the three-match stretch. She distributed 30 assists against Eau Gallie and 32 against Edgewood before completing the week with 29 assists and 10 aces against Titusville.
That final performance gave Cotham an impressive double-double and helped her move to 190 assists for the season, the fifth-highest total in the state.
EMA MICHELL — MERRITT ISLAND MUSTANGS
Michell continued to demonstrate why she is one of the most complete volleyball players in Brevard County.
Across four matches from Aug. 22 through Aug. 29, the Merritt Island junior recorded 57 kills, 49 digs and 13 service aces.
She was at her best against some of the strongest competition in Florida, finishing with 19 kills and 19 digs against the state’s top-ranked team before producing 21 kills and 15 digs against the No. 10-ranked team.
Michell leads the Mustangs with 106 kills and ranks second on the team with 79 digs.
CROSS COUNTRY
OLIVIA DAVIS — SATELLITE SCORPIONS
Davis separated herself from a field of 135 runners at the Indian River Fairgrounds Invitational in Vero Beach on Aug. 29.
The Satellite freshman captured the individual championship with a time of 19:50.2, finishing 17.4 seconds ahead of the runner-up.
ESTHER DOBBIN — COCOA BEACH MINUTEMEN
Dobbin did not simply win the Cocoa Beach Invitational on Aug. 25. She controlled the race from start to finish.
The eighth grader crossed the finish line in 20:28.2 and captured the individual championship by an extraordinary margin of two minutes and 39.7 seconds.
ASHER CERVENY — COCOA BEACH MINUTEMEN
Cerveny gave the hometown Minutemen another championship performance at the Cocoa Beach Invitational.
He completed the course in 17:54.87 and reached the finish line 24.74 seconds ahead of his closest challenger.
BRODY JOHNSON — ROCKLEDGE RAIDERS
Only three-tenths of a second separated Johnson from the individual championship at the Kowboy Invitational in Osceola County.
The Rockledge standout finished as the runner-up with an exceptional time of 16:04.9, pushing the eventual winner all the way to the finish line.
BOWLING
KRISTALYN WRIGHT — HERITAGE PANTHERS
Wright delivered the highest girls’ score recorded in Brevard County during the week.
The Heritage bowler rolled an outstanding 268 against Odyssey Charter on Aug. 25, completing one of the week’s best performances in any sport.
ETHAN GRIFFA — MELBOURNE BULLDOGS
Griffa helped Melbourne earn a victory over Viera by producing the county’s highest boys’ bowling score of the week.
The Bulldogs standout rolled a 267 on Aug. 27, finishing only one pin behind the week’s highest overall score.
FOOTBALL
TANK HARVEY — TITUSVILLE TERRIERS
Harvey needed only one play to announce that he was in for a special night against Holy Trinity.
The Titusville senior caught a 75-yard touchdown pass on the Terriers’ first offensive snap and continued creating problems for the Tigers throughout the game.
Harvey finished with five receptions for 90 yards and one touchdown while rushing for 107 yards and two more scores. His 197 yards from scrimmage and three touchdowns helped Titusville roll to a 44-9 victory.
MADDUX MARTINSON — MERRITT ISLAND CHRISTIAN COUGARS
Martinson accounted for all six touchdowns as Merritt Island Christian shut out Bell Creek Academy, 39-0.
The senior quarterback completed seven of eight passes for 169 yards and five touchdowns, producing a touchdown pass on five of his seven completions.
Martinson also rushed for 21 yards and another score, completing a remarkably efficient performance for the undefeated Cougars.
KEVIN VERPAELE — MERRITT ISLAND MUSTANGS
Verpaele delivered through the air and on the ground while leading Merritt Island to a convincing 35-7 victory over Melbourne.
The University of South Florida commit completed 12 of 21 passes for 212 yards and one touchdown. He added 85 rushing yards and three scores, accounting for four of Merritt Island’s five touchdowns.
Verpaele’s performance helped the Mustangs defeat a talented Bulldogs team and earn one of Brevard County’s most impressive victories of the week.
TRENTON WASHINGTON-MCC
One week after throwing five touchdown passes, sophomore quarterback Trenton Washington continued his outstanding start by accounting for four more scores.
Washington completed 13 of 24 passes for 202 yards and two touchdowns while rushing 11 times for 41 yards and two additional scores.
Through two regular-season games, Washington has accounted for nine touchdown, seven through the air and two on the ground.
CELEBRATING BREVARD COUNTY’S STUDENT-ATHLETES
Nearly 100 emails arrived during the voting period, demonstrating the passion Brevard County communities have for their schools and student-athletes.
Brevard Sports Network congratulates Zion Jones on earning this week’s BSN | Legacy Sports Construction Athlete of the Week honor and recognizes every nominee for the performances that placed them among the county’s best.
BSN also thanks Patrick and Stacey Ross and everyone at Legacy Sports Construction for continuing to invest in Brevard County’s student-athletes and helping provide another platform on which their accomplishments can be celebrated.
One week after Tyrese Jefferson rushed for 314 yards, Jones produced 311 of his own and helped Bayside change the history of one of South Brevard’s longest-running rivalries.
The Bears needed a special performance to defeat Palm Bay. Zion Jones gave them one they will never forget.
