When children become stronger readers, they read more, build vocabulary, gain knowledge, and continue to grow. When children struggle with reading, they often read less, which can cause the gap between them and their peers to grow over time.

But this is important: the gap is not inevitable.

Early identification, explicit instruction, and timely intervention can change a child’s reading trajectory. We don't need to wait for children to fail before giving them the support they need.

The earlier we recognize a reading difficulty and respond with effective instruction, the better. 💛

We keep asking why so many kids struggle to sit still, focus, listen, and manage frustration. But maybe part of the answer has nothing to do with what happens inside the classroom.

Childhood has changed.

More time on phones. More gaming. More short-form videos. More instant entertainment. Less time reading, playing outside, creating, imagining, and simply learning how to be bored.

Then we ask children to walk into a classroom, put the screens away, sit quietly, listen to someone speak, concentrate on one task, and keep going even when that task isn't immediately entertaining.

Those skills don't magically appear when the school bell rings.

Reading builds sustained attention. Outdoor play gives children opportunities to problem-solve, take risks, negotiate with others, and manage frustration. Even boredom has value because it teaches children that they don't need to be constantly stimulated.

Technology isn't going anywhere, nor should it. But there has to be balance.

Maybe giving kids more of what childhood used to contain naturally could help them develop more of the skills we're desperately trying to teach in classrooms.
